Anyone headed to Daytona 24?

I'll be there in the BMW corral. Missed the last 2 years, but good to be going back!

Anyone know if there's a good way to sneak into the stands? Our seats are above pit rows, but would like to sit in other parts of the track since its a really long race

Any good food recommendations while down there?

I'll be there.

You have access to the stands, it's open to everyone with a ticket. It's best to take the tram and exit through the tunnel at turn 1 and it drops you off near the red 1. Then re-enter near there and go up the grandstands. I like to sit near the top of the red 2 area, it gives you a great view of about 1/3 of the track.

Man o man...haven't been to the Rolex since 2004, with my then GF who toughed it out in the cold rain. Brings back memories....

I doubt that the access restrictions have increased since. It ain't like a NASCAR race - the place is (relatively speaking) empty, so you can go all around pretty much without restrictions. I went and visited my old race car in the pits...two subsequent owners later and they decided to run it in the 24, I think on the original engine. It made it all the way to the early morning, as I recall....

No pit access this year apparently. Damnit Covid! Pit access makes the event.

I crewed for a team back in 1998. Let me see if I can find the pic...found it.

Edd Davin's team. Basically whatever the team needed. I came over the wall as the fire bottle guy for all the pit stops. It was a blast. Being a huge Ferrari fan it was cool watching the 333SPs run everyone.
The car basically gave up in the hours after midnight, but we did get it back on track for the finish. Good memories. I'm the tall guy all the way to the left.

SO awesome -
It must have been great to be on the front lines and over-the-wall to support this team; so very exciting.

I pitted on a friend's sprint car in SoCal in the early 70's....back when Ascot Speedway in the LA area was still around; nothing like standing in the infield and watching 600 hp small block Chevy powered sprint cars going 120 mph down the straight and tossing it sideways on the 5/8 mile clay oval.

Nothing exotic - certainly not a 333SP or any kind of prototype. It was my old 2000 Porsche GT3 Supercup car that I had run at PCA and TrackMasters trackdays, and then in PCA club racing. I was a rank amateur, and it was an awesome car but probably not the right platform to learn on, so I sold it after about a year or so.

Sorry not to be able to upload a photo.

How was the balance of the 996 on track; was managing the oversteer an issue even with the full race setup? I know it was difficult to manage the slip. thanks for sharing your experiences all.

I raced karts and Spec Racer Ford and Spec Miata but nothing like this...it was cool. Wasn't in love with most of the guys but it was a ragtag team since he had no money we were all volunteers.

Awesome - would love to hear more about the three venues you competed in. i drove a friend's full-blown race kart (Honda 125 2 stroke/6 speed/Brembo brakes, etc) on a purpose built kart race track with significant elevation change....i used to race in the 250 motocross class back in the day and was experienced with 2-stroke power....after 4 laps as hard as i could push, I pulled into the pits - the owner of the kart asked why I stopped....my neck was rubber from the lateral G's.

So hard to see the P2 DPi car (Ganassi team) lose the RR tire with 7 min to play in the 24 hour cycle....

Hat tip to MBM340 for the photos website - I was able to look up an online picture of "my old car" at the 2004 Daytona 24:

https://www.racingsportscars.com/pho...-02-01-014.jpg

The 996 GT3 Cup was fairly neutral on track - I would say that it was more apt to understeer pretty much everywhere, rather than oversteer. (But again, I was a complete amateur.) My race mechanic probably set it up extra-understeer-y to keep me from doing anything stupid (he is smart like that).

I eventually started generating some slip angles on power, but I think it would have been far easier to learn how to do that (and generally how to corner quickly) in a lower-powered car running DOT tires (Hoosiers or whatever back then) rather than slicks. A lot less money, too. It also would have been easier to learn somewhere more forgiving, rather than Watkins Glen (where I went the most).

My last race car was a track-prepped RS America with a mildly tweaked engine and gearbox, cage, fuel cell and fire system running DOT tires under a rubber-less suspension. It was super-flat through the corners and a much better platform to learn on. For anyone thinking about going racing (or even just trackdays), my hearty recommendation is that this is the way to go...there will always be time to get the super-gee-whiz snarling race car down the road, once you know what you're doing.

Sure, happy to do so. The tire in the last 7 minutes was BRUTAL. At least BMW drew up to a podium in GTLM. That was impressive.

Will discuss the racing stuff maybe this weekend. I started by road racing 600cc bikes. THAT was crazy.

The glen is awesome. Ran there twice last season in the M2.
