A few updates for December.

And an answer to those who ask "can you tell X about Y?" - when I can, I post, no need to ask.

Does this change your statement about the S55 as well? or will the competition package still get the S55?

the same reason there is no 550i and only an m550 and no x4 40i and only an x4 m40i and no 240i and only an m240i. bmw has just tacked on another m badge and included msport package to make it feel more unique while not going full m on it. this m stands for marketing.

This is why---BMW has a structure of cars now.....

BMW i -> BMW i Performance -> BMW Series -> M Performance -> BMW M

i Performance and M Performance are taking cues from the perspective "brands" and injecting them into the standard series production cars. "Massaged" by i or M is the best way I put it...

It is not like they are just putting an M Sport Package on and charging more...they have specific design elements, power bumps and M Performance specific tuning...It is a way to make the upper level vehicles feel a little more unique and worth the price and standard equipment bump.

Exactly. BMWi and BMWM are bookends. BMWi Performance and BMWM Performance are sub volumes in between BMW.

It also reflects their market research showing that the buyers of the top engine non M cars were most often buying the sportiest packages and customer feedback they are looking for something bit closer to an M while retaining more balance with being a daily driver than an M car does (xdrive, price, etc). Doesn't hurt that audi and benz did the same thing first.

What exactly is the status of a next generation 6er GC? Will there be one or this mediocre-looking at best, family oriented 6er GT will take its place? In which case how is this supposed to compete with the CLS and to a lesser extent the A7? Ditching the best looking BMW from the current line up for this? An 8er Coupe/GC will compete with the S-Class/A9 coupes so what 4-door coupe will BMW offer in the 6er segment? The GT? Not gonna work at all, it looks like a bigger 3er GT at best which in turn is no great looking car either. Total mess up in my view even if the bean counters somehow think it makes sense. This car will have nothing on the CLS and A7.

Is that a calculated response?
I'd sure like to see the formula ...

If This and then That divided by $$$$= build supercar.

The Gran Coupe and Gran Turismo will co-exist.
The next 4er is also pencilled in for a Gran Coupe as will the next generation 2er.
The 8er Gran Coupe will be the more practical version of the Coupe which is currently testing.

So in the absence of yes there will be a 6 GC replacement one can only assume none.

I have seen the next 5/6 GT and it looks nice at least. CLS nice, I don't know but definitely better than the current turtle.

Or maybe the 8 will supersede the 6 in that specific market segment. Opening the 6 to attack a different segment

I don't think you meant the "->" sign as "greater than," because I don't think M is necessarily greater than I division in all perspectives. Performance? Absolutely. But efficiency? The i brand would be greater. (Though I have to admit i3 is quite fun and peppy, and although the i8 can use more power, it certainly is not slow by any means).

I like what BMW is doing here. They're capturing all sorts of consumer demand by diversifying their brands to cater to many different types of car buyers/owners.

For those that are interested in efficiency and hybrid/electrics, they have the I brand. I like the concept of "I Performance" because it's supposed to be a meeting ground between a "regular" BMW, but has the hybrid elements.

I'm really liking the "M Performance" division. There are many buyers that can afford M cars, but do not wish to get one because it's not the best daily. The "M Performance" I think is a great middle ground where this group of owners can get the M power and sportiness, but still maintain a comfortable ride for a daily.

I know a lot of M fans are complaining about the dilution of the M brand, but I don't see this a dilution at all. I see this as bringing the best of the M division to car owners who want and can afford M cars, but don't want the stiffness and always on sport mode of the M cars. It doesn't meant that it's cheapening the M brand in anyway. It's a win win for everyone here.

Exactly. They have plans for the replacement 6er but it is too early to talk about them. Think of 6er GT in the same way of 2er Active Tourer/Gran Tourer that they share the same number but are very, very different.

There will be a different chassis code. But it is too early to advise what it will come with or what time frame but possibly around eighteen months as before. Rest assured the upcoming G30 based F90 M5 will provide some clues to the progression of the next M3/M4.
