I can afford an $80K car. Heck, I can afford an $84K car. Everything else being the same, I'd prefer the $80K version. If it snows, I stay home.

BM Shouldve only optioned AWD for the competition from launch, like the M5. We soon got used to that.
Xdrive is and has proven to be THAT good, in a car in such technological modern times that really RWD option isnt needed. My own G80 is RWD and I love the thing but cant see why RWD needs to be an option as a seperate model when its already baked into the Xdrive model as an option. Well that wouldn't make much sense. All M3/M4 allocations are interchangeable between the three variants. Shouldn't have mattered.

The xDrive is fully disconnect-able on the vehicles. The only trade off is the (stupid) drift mode with DSC off. I think that BMW could simply add more software in the vehicle, letting users drive a 100%-RWD mode with some DSC/ESP capabilities. Simple fix, no hardware. Even if it doesn't remove the weight (100lb is not much tbh). That said, with the diff. settings, I bet most xDrive cars are on RWD only 90% of the time. It's already 100% decoupled on highways for instance. |

Sadly, many initial xDrive vehicles were specced without this option as people were not aware that RWD mode in AWD vehicle disables traction control. |

But the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) remains OFF... meaning one less careful driver could end up with the back of the car before the front. I with BMW could just figure out a persmissive-but-safer DSC option instead of the "You are on your own" mode. Note: Maybe the TC does the job. Some more informed owners probably have the answer. To me, steering with the throttle is what gives that emotional experience with an M car, and I still get that with the X-Drive!
