Other than the curved screen it all looks a bit ‘change for change’s sake’ to me. A mild refreshment to boost sales and encourage existing owners to ‘trade up’.
I do like the flat screen, although I think it would have been better if some effort had gone into closing the gap between the end of the screen and the fascia…the attachment looks like something suffering from a severe lack of design skills! If the long wheel base model were available in the uk it would interest me…think it is China only? |

Was looking back through the presser and it doesn't mention the executive pack?
Nor does it say anything about digital key plus (where your phone works just like a fob). The other id8 cars have it. |

Still think that screen looks awful. Don’t agree at all with the ones saying that only people bashing it are those who are always resistant to change. I’m in my 30s, work for a tech company, love technology and typically love more modernized looks. Not this. To me it’s sloppy design just slapping a massive screen on top of the dash. This isn’t the way all manufacturers are going. Plenty of new EVs coming out with a lot of technology and a lot of screens, that design the dash a lot better than this.

But yeah, it was assumed that G20/G21 LCI would introduce it and it'd then trickle down (up?) to i4. |

I'm glad I have the non-LCI 3-series.
Although the car itself looks appealing, not having my default buttons is a huge letdown and, additionally, the gear selector in this version. Although I have automatic, I still like the feeling of having to move a "chunky" shifter up or down, not a flimsy "I don't know what". Nevertheless, beautiful car, just not for me ;-)

Buttons are very very cheap. They're commodity items.

I'm happy that I have Adaptive Laser light because it is more advanced technology just that regulation to be blame for this new LEDs, they are Matrix i think. Why would bmw ditch laser light when they just released the M4 CSL with laser technology brake light which look so damn DOPE.

The screen itself may be more to manufacture, but the overall expense for BMW has definitely gone down. They don't have to produce the extra gauge hood and surrounding moulded pieces and more so if they are leather wrapped, there are separate wire harnesses and wiring that were previously required for the two separate screens and and the memory button row and the HVAC controls. Not to mention they are throwing those same screens in everything now and don't even have to consider the interior design. Reducing parts = reducing costs.

Extra gauge hood is just plastic molding. Doesn't cost anything. And BMW has always used the same systems accross different models. And all the wiring harnesses and controllers are still there, they're just connected to the screen instead of plastic buttons. Sure there would be some cost savings, but the screen and multiple time faster CPU would cost way more than anything you save from wires or buttons. By way more, I don't mean 30-40% more, I mean way more than that.

You're so funny:
The reality is, in 2010s cars had this kind of interior. In 2020s, they will have id8 kind of interior.

If you add the SKUS of all the parts that are removed, the cost savings from there wouldn't even come close to the cost of SOC and the screens. I've been working in HW&SW dev Project Management for 15 years. ID7 ID8
