Or maybe they have no idea what costs what. News flash: R&D and dev costs that goes to that totally new software and the BOM of 15” way brighter, sharper screen and faster CPU are exponentially higher than that plastic gear lever and than keeping the old system that I have in my car right now. There is no ‘cost savings’ in this interior. And I have idrive7 and 2021 M340i. My car is NOT better than this one just because I have it

I think the front end, side profile and 3/4 view looks great! That rear diffuser/bumper though…

The exterior is a welcoming improvement.
The interior makes you wished you went for a pre-LCI. This new trend of removing all buttons and placing tablets with sticks on the dashboard somehow does not sit well with me. Now the shifter is also gone. Was hoping to upgrade our 330i to a 330e but it'll give me anxiety to drive without the buttons and the lack of traditional gear selector.

Really hoping they keep the M-shifter on the M3 facelift. I'm not a fan of the "Shift Nub" on the 3 LCI.

I think the new i3 (the 3er, not the egg) actually looks better than the M Sport/M340i. Hope it's that same design for the base 330i LCI. Not happy about the shifter, 1-8 shortcuts, and half the physical buttons being gone.

Exterior looks good, apart from the lifted edges of the rear defuser look a bit fussy. Interior I'm not a fan of removing buttons, but curious to see the interface as BMW are some of the best at in car tech. Does increase the appeal of the X3 which retains the current interior button layout.
Also a shame the options haven't really changed, would be good to see carbon roof (or at least sun roof delete), M seats and noise insulated glass as per the European spec cars. I'd say it's a pretty conservative update overall. |

Shameful there is not M3/4 that is derived from this design. Oh well, not in the market anyways.

Most likely the only component with an increased cost is the large curved display. However, this display is offset with a simpler dash design, a single screen to install, less wiring, HVAC module elimination, simpler assembly, etc.... It's all a function of overall cost. IDrive 8 is a push from BMW marketing as a way to compete with other market segment cars.

Cheaper to slap in a screen rather than design a dash around a screen (ex E90, E60)

This is why I sometimes prefer the non-M sport vehicles because I just think the calmer, more restrained design looks cleaner and ages better with time. |
