Not a fan of the rear diffuser, removal of gear shifter, front oddly shaped L scoops, and the horrendous looking iDrive 8 screens that looked like it was just slapped on without any consideration to make it look like it's built into the car. I'll be sticking with my pre-LCI.

I thought BMW's head of design said all M performance models (or the M340i in this case) would be getting quad tips now (like the LCI X7 M60i has).

Looks like a fabulous update all the way around. They will sell a ton of them.
If left up to vocal-minority forum folks, BMW would only make 500hp purple metallic station-wagons with 6MT and no screens and plastic buttons galore and have it be as short as a 2008 128i so the whole package could weigh 2,800 pounds and be "tossable" and it would look like an LCI of an LCI of a design from 2013. BMW would be dead in short order if they listened to some of you literally. It's to the point where it may make sense for them to actively do the opposite. |

I like the front bumper but that rear bumper will take some time to adjust to. The dash, however, is really futuristic looking and I like it a lot.

"How do we make the lines cohesive and integrate the displays elegantly within the dash?" Plops big rectangular screen on top of dash. "It's beer thirty, let's blow this joint." I can certainly appreciate upgraded tech with touchscreens and better displays, but I think I would just be staring at the sharp top left corner of the screen jutting out from the curved dash behind it while feeling nostalgic for the cockpit-like attributes of previous gens. Hope I'm wrong. But idk.

Screen vs Buttons, personally I think BMW and other car manufactures are going a bit too far removing them all, but the other systems are getting better though.
I've got a new ish X3 M40d and where as before I would go into the nav, add new destination and start putting in a postcode / address I don't anymore. It's just press the speak button say set journey to (and add any crazy destination) and off it goes. Is so much better than the old systems that would be hopeless. Even adding a mid point in a journey and hey presto. Now in saying that I still have preset buttons and like just pressing 1 button to call my wife, go to a certain radio station or other things and that's easy and can be done almost without me taking my eyes off the road and thinking. Change the seats temp, flow is all a simple button away. BMW 2 series and X1 basically anything lower than a 3 series won't even have a jog wheel or buttons near the gear numb. So they get things even worse EVERYTHING is on the screen. I can't help but think from a safety prospective it should be more time with eyes on a road and less time looking at a screen driving at 40mph+ trying to change a setting, in a weapon that can easily kill you or someone else. But unless someone legislates that it should be a single click for X or Y or have the option of it then screens here we come. |

Hmm the screen thing for me at least does it better then the original mostly because it gets rid of that gianormus hump above the gauge cluster witch is a part of the dashboard witch is nice. I like it a lot on my i4, instead of built in to the dash. But they could have done a better job with making the screen feel better at place i don't even know if it is necessary to have such big screen, they could have gone a tad smaller and give more visibility. But it does look more modern then the previous one in my opinion i like that the trim is more exposed it make it looks nice especially when going for the carbon look it does it better. And i prefer when the dashboard behind the screen looks more at place while it integrates with the trim witch goes under the big screen at the same time it gives the more "roomy" feel because it looks like the screen is "hovering"
The hvac issue is a none issue you don't need specific buttons for that when it is on display all the time. You still get the two most important buttons available to you defrosting and max fans on front window to get rid of fog when that becomes an issue. I guess to simplify it they could have just put two buttons below the navigation wheel for heated seats instead of that black plastic, but other then that you get to choose use the navigation wheel to fiddle around the menus or use the touch screen, the navigation wheel witch you can set certain shortcuts to makes for fast navigation when needed a certain menu. Or simply use the AI to set the heat settings witch is the least distraction above all even less distracting then pressing + or - on some buttons for that. Hmm removing the shifter well i guess thats to each and everyone on automatics i doesn't matter to much unless you use that to shift gears when in "manual" mode sens you have the paddles behind the steering wheel. But what they should have improved on changing the plastic that surrounds the shifter/gear selector that is just not good enough any more. And oh my god this thing with the "piano black" everywhere on the car yeah that is getting old rather quick.
