The new tiny shift lever means shifting the drivetrain to S/M mode is a lot more difficult to find by feel now. Instead of quickly moving the traditional lever leftward (say, as I approach an off ramp), we'll have to feel for that little lever. This is my biggest issue. It might just push me to the M2.

Personally I like the floating dashboard more than the outgoing version of all-digital dashboard. Elsewhere the design of a floating image/screen in space has long been established as desirable. Cars aren't really any different. I understand BMW's moving to this direction.

PSA: the 1-8 presets are now digital, and accessed by an upward swipe on the screen.

literally what is this obsession with getting rid of gear shifts... I dont get it. never heard anyone complain about having one. in a ZF/DCT car I like being able to use the shifter instead of the paddles in manual mode sometimes.

is it just me of the front reminds me of an Oni Mask? overall it's not awful, the diffuser is a bit weird though. meh.

Saves them money per car.

I bet that transmission button panel is much cheaper than the old electronic joystick.

But they could have done a better job with making the screen feel better at place i don't even know if it is necessary to have such big screen, they could have gone a tad smaller and give more visibility. But it does look more modern then the previous one in my opinion i like that the trim is more exposed it make it looks nice especially when going for the carbon look it does it better. And i prefer when the dashboard behind the screen looks more at place while it integrates with the trim witch goes under the big screen at the same time it gives the more "roomy" feel because it looks like the screen is "hovering"

The hvac issue is a none issue you don't need specific buttons for that when it is on display all the time. You still get the two most important buttons available to you defrosting and max fans on front window to get rid of fog when that becomes an issue. I guess to simplify it they could have just put two buttons below the navigation wheel for heated seats instead of that black plastic, but other then that you get to choose use the navigation wheel to fiddle around the menus or use the touch screen, the navigation wheel witch you can set certain shortcuts to makes for fast navigation when needed a certain menu. Or simply use the AI to set the heat settings witch is the least distraction above all even less distracting then pressing + or - on some buttons for that.

Hmm removing the shifter well i guess thats to each and everyone on automatics i doesn't matter to much unless you use that to shift gears when in "manual" mode sens you have the paddles behind the steering wheel.

But what they should have improved on changing the plastic that surrounds the shifter/gear selector that is just not good enough any more.

And oh my god this thing with the "piano black" everywhere on the car yeah that is getting old rather quick.

Like the new one better.

But…

The HVAC controls are now buried within iDrive 8.

In 6 months you'll be praising this LCI

I don't think anyone is arguing that ID8 is cheaper than ID7. The cost cutting is specifically removing buttons and integrating the functions into the screen.

Best case would be ID8 (screen, processor) while keeping the physical controls. It would cost more to make, but not unreasonable to expect on a luxury car.

For the physical controls they did keep, they made odd choices. Max AC and rear defroster are things you use a few times per year. Temp and fan speed are things you use a few time per drive.

Personally, I like this G20 LCI very much.

But this marks the last 2 production years for the G20 3-Series. Would it be better to wait out the next 24 months for the next gen 3-Series?

If you like this then I'd say waiting isn't a bad idea since it'll certainly trend more in this direction.

Also something to note, maybe the Cerium trim is no longer since the release shows the shadowline package off the bat. As well as it being gone on the X3 LCI

That and having a shift knob in the correct location! I could never get used to Mercedes having it on the steering column.

BMW now chose to replace it with a button?!!!

In the videos the reviewers stated shadowline would be standard but you could opt for the traditional trim.

Indeed the Cerium Grey trim seems like it's gone for good off the M Performance lineup. They're back to classic chrome badging, with black optionally available for the grille

My guess is that customers didn't necessarily dislike Cerium Grey per se, but perhaps were struggling to spontaneously pinpoint the M Performance versions within a given model range due to this peculiar badging, since the level below (standard or M Sport) and the level above (base M) were each getting chrome badging but the one in-between somehow didn't. Now the badging's been harmonized from the ground up with all chrome, up to M Competition where it switches to black, then M CS gets that champagne hue which actually looks similar to the defunct Cerium Grey -- this potential confusion with M CS may in fact be the main reason.

same here … 2011 e90 335i no nav manual will serve as dd for a long time … don't need anything else

time to buy good pre owned vehicle and keep it … these new models have no advantage and that slapped on screen is horrid.

There is also a physical push/pull lever to alternate the transmission between Drive and Neutral, which I've circled.

Yeah that makes sense. Just curious if you can select the sport setting for the transmission via the gear selector. Maybe pulling it down once more after drive would do that. Or maybe it actually does move left and right a small amount.

The 2 series coupe G42 M240i has now also been updated with OS8 & the new wide screen displays. I was just having a play on the BMW UK website & found this. I wonder if all orders in place will also be updated to OS8 & the impact on the value of the cars delivered with OS7. I have contacted my dealer & still waiting to hear back. If anyone has any further information please let me know.

Not bad look. 100% not a fan or the iPads they forgot to design into the interior and just throw on with a mount. I don't care as much if the iDrive screen is like that. But definitely not the instrument cluster. Not being integrated into the dash just looks awful.

The lack of a few physical buttons will be a major step backwards- namely temp control, fan speed and the 8 presets.

If they had left that alone, there really wouldn't be many issues.

I think the gauge layout and the shifter are stupid but that's something you could get used to... those physical buttons are an obvious issue the monent you get in. I can't imagine driving an M2 and M3 when they get these updates.

You are right.Just looked on the UK site and they have also ditched the traditional gear shifter on the M240i for 2023.It will be interesting to see if they keep the traditional shifter for the G87.
