Yes, that's what I fear will happen. I tested both the M240i and the M2, OG and C, before deciding on a M240 this time around. Even without the price difference, I think I would have picked the M240i over the M2C. I'm 1/2 inclined to try to get a 2021 M240i in it's current form to replace my 2018 M240i and just keep it for a long long time. The B58, if it were available in the new 2 Coupe will not be THAT much different, won't have a manual and will have the new digital dash which I really don't like. Other than CLAR there's not a lot to look forward to.

The Bronco looks great but it's the honeymoon right now as once they start manufacturing these things and Ford starts doing Ford things then reality sets in.

This gen isn't a good fit for me because of limited tech. Taking that out of the equation, I'm not a good fit for the M2 DCT (or any manual) so M240i would've been my choice too. Having tested the M8 and X3M, I think my next gen pick is an M2 but too soon to really know. Newer tech is important to me so lots to look forward to. Maybe wait till these are out and then get a new to you 2021 if you still prefer yours? Maybe test X3 M to experience that engine/transmission and Z4/M340i to get some sense of how different next gen M Performance may feel?

I'm curious what "newer tech" in the newer iDrive 7 is a "must have" over the iDrive 6 in the current M240i? I have to admit, having a navigation screen was probably the biggest reason I finally gave up my E46 330Ci ZHP. I was using Waze by propping up my phone. With my M240i, I just needed the CarPlay fullscreen hack and I'm very happy. I drove a new 3 series as a loaner not too long ago with the iDrive 7 and have to say that I didn't find the navigation screen that much of an improvement (I use CarPlay mostly anyway) and hate, hate, HATED the digital dashboard. So cluttered and redundant, tach that went the wrong way and was hard to read. For me, I was VERY glad to be back in my own car with dials I could read and I didn't miss a slightly larger screen.

I know it's all subjective tho.

Honestly all the technology is overrated. My wife and I's Mercs have probably a thousand different features that we've never even used or heard of. We simply just plug our phones in and use CarPlay and spotify/google maps. Only time we really use the infotainment system is for ambient lighting or the multi-view cameras when reversing.

Not iD. Intelligent performance (shifting, steering, braking, etc.) and safety/autonomy. Some info here:

I think this is another area we disagree on. I found that the F22 generation has "just enough" assistance. The wheel will vibrate if it thinks it's detecting I'm going out of the lane. Whereas the newer ones will try to steer for you. Again with the 3er loaner I found it was trying to do this at times I didn't want it to so ended up turning it off. The parking sensors / rear view camera in my current car was a welcome addition whereas the "all around" cameras in the new ones are just overkill.

One of the things that I found annoying / distracting in the new digital dash is that it was trying to bombard you with way too much unnecessary information in duplicate or even tertiary locations. Driving directions was the worst offender. I don't really need to see that I should turn left on the SatNav screen, on the digital dash AND the HUD. I don't need to see what PodCast I'm playing between my tach and speedo. I don't know anyone that really uses the gesture controls and I can already "hey Siri" for maps, phone, etc, so hey BMW doesn't seem to add much.

Perhaps I'm now a curmudgeon but one of the reasons I've always heard a lot of folks like BMWs is for a clean, logical, simple control layout. Give me a big readable tach, speedo and only the needed gauges in front of me and a big enough screen for my CarPlay off to the right and I'm happy. All the rest is just clutter. I think a lot of 2er drivers actually appreciate that since it's not one in the "high end" of the lines it didn't get as cluttered up with all the gizmos that the higher end lines got to entice people to switch out cars every 3 years or so.

BMW Blog just put out an article about today's spyshots and noted that "there’s a large group of the BMW fan-base itching to see the new 2 Series. Because it will remain rear-wheel drive, and likely not carry the same new grille as the 4 Series, the next-gen 2er is almost certainly going to be the enthusiast-darling of the Bavarian lineup."

I think I'm not alone in 2er "enthusiasts" that would be quite happy to see the the coupe at least remain fairly simple / doesn't really need all the tech gizmos for us to want it. If it came with last gen dash and iDrive but manual transmission that would be fine by me.

Yeah, and I'm not even the curmudgeoniest. I have a buddy who owns a bunch a few 2002s that thinks anything past a E36 isn't a "real BMW". My E46 was barely acceptable to him. As much better the steering is in that car, I have to admit I appreciate having a backup camera now.

Hope we get 1M like steroid pumping fenders so there is enough space to fit 305s square on 11 inch rims without fuss....

Hopefully this won't grow too much in size and weight, if anything it could use a diet, current generation is already a bit too portly.

The proportions look really good.Size is similar to the F87.It also looks like the 2 series will finally be getting HUD.Hopefully they will be updating the digital gauges. The current ones don’t look that good in the new 3 series.

I'm not excited about the front. The headlights are pushed out to the corners, slightly resembling the Z4 (which I don't see as a good thing). I wasn't planning to replace the F87 anyway.

I gotta say it is looking really promising...hopefully it stays smallish in dimensions
it doesn't look huge next to the mini at least (although minis are a lot bigger than they used to be)

Wrong year. I am sure that is a 2022 2 series going through testing. The 2021s are currently in production.

Liking the size and shaping up nicely. I'm one who would say I'm ok with the usual 5% growth. Will still be considerably smaller than the 4er and I wouldn't object to a tad more wheelbase and space.

Looking fantastic!

KEY is that there is no evidence of a front grille atrocity that is plaguing the rest of the BMW lineup.

Difficult to say for certain, but is appears BMW has 'drawn out' the rear third of the G87 . . . looks M4-like now, which is awesome. If I were to complain about the F87 design, it is the blunted or squared-off rear third (C pillar).

Throw an S58 under the hood and the G87 is going to be an incredible successor to the F87. The G87 M2 is going to be the new M4 for BMW enthusiasts, if the F87 is not already.

Serious consideration for anyone on fence or tired of waiting for M2CS build to be taken . . . consider holding out for the G87 M2 at this point. I believe the G87 is going to be even more 'special,' particularly with the S58 engine.

Well, enough enthusiasm for now. . .
