iPhone video on main screen

I must be missing something here, can't figure out how to get any video source from iPhone playing on main screen (while parked of course).

My phone works well with CarPlay, but when i play a video source I only hear the audio through the car, and I get a gray screen that says "Live Streaming" and only has a play bar with buttons.
I've switched to iDrive connected mode for the phone connection, and same thing...I get the audio only (which makes since this is only a Bluetooth audio connection at this point).
All I can find online so far is various forms of instruction on how to set up "screen mirroring" which involves Miracast, and only works on Android from what I understand?

So what's the secret to getting iPhone video onscreen? Do I need to be using a USB cable or something? TIA.

So digging back though the last couple years of threads on this topic on various other models, it's seeming like iOS screen mirroring can't be done without 3rd-party hardware??

So, BMW doubles down on Apple by investing heavily in CarPlay...but then uses an exclusively non-Apple-compatible screen mirroring functionality??

Apple doesn't support miracast I believe.

This is an Apple limitation, not BMW..........
