I actually had this issue. For some reason I was expecting the circular cutout on the handle to be the reader but the NFC reader is actually in the middle of the door handle. I go surfing so using my watch as a key is ideal. The first I did this I got locked out and had to use my watch to call my brother and have him download the bmw app and unlock it. I also reset all the digital keys but be warned, doing so I needed to wait a day to readd it(at least for me). After that and actually knowing the position of the sensor it started working. Granted it's not as "reliable" as my phone but it works non the less. Try the middle of the handle before resetting. One thing that annoys me is the watch does not open the BMW connected app. Every time I open it, it says to sign in on my iPhone which I already did. I tried deleting both apps from phone and watch and hard reset(not factory reset) my phone and watch and it still gives me the same "sign in on iPhone" bs. Hope this helps

The only difficulty with the watch is getting your wrist far enough into the tray near the NFC reader to start the car.

Thanks all.
The issue was where to place my watch on the door handle. You have to find the right place and hold it there for a second or two. The watch is not as easy to use as the phone but it does the job |

Earlier builds get the shaft. No Samsung/iPhone digital key.

Not necessarily. It's associated with wiring harness Service Pack 18, with 07/20 software and comfort access. So in theory, a 2019 X5 is compatible, but just needs a software update. 2020 X1/2/3/4, i3 and i8, and 2 series coupe are all using SP15, and cannot be updated.

In the UK you need the comfort access pack, so I assume that is similar in other territories, as well as the newer harness.
*edit* I missed someone already mentioned comfort access. |

Im in a 2023 LCI m340; can anyone tell me if the digital key, on either the watch or iPhone, is supposed to work on approach? In other words, are they supposed to be able to unlock/lock my vehicle when approaching/leaving, like my key fob does?

If you plan to use the iPhone to unlock your car, play with the feature a little to make sure you know the sweet spot on the door handle. On mine its very specific, and can get frustrating if you are in a hurry to get in the car.
