I can regularly make the G20 330i pop at least in Sport Individual and Sport+ while driving but I think you can do it even in other modes. I also do this in the Lotus Elise, the car has no fancy software controlled stuff the BMW has so there all the sounds are pure physics.
How to get a pop out of any car that is remotely capable of producing one: 1. Warm up the car, you should do this every time you drive, don't over-rev the car before it's at temperature 2. Put the car in a mode that allows high RPM without upshifting (SI, S+, Manual, etc.) 2. From a low speed, accelerate in wide open throttle through 1-2 gears to top of 2nd or top of 3rd gear, not higher 3. Lift-off the throttle to ~3-5%, not all the way 4. Hold the throttle in position and enjoy. The reason for this is you want 3 things to happen at the same time: 1. HOT exhaust (accelerate through a couple of gears wide open) 2. Engine breaking (you don't want to go higher than third, eb works in low gears) 3. Fuel-rich exhaust gases (I don't know the real reason here, my best guess is that lifting off the throttle incompletely keeps the injectors going but the air pressure can't keep up, this is coupled with the engine being driven by the wheels at high RPM)
