They're not sure if it's re-introduced - but if so, it will be in the March or July software updates. I'm still on the 11/2019 update, so will wait to see. I believe they're bringing it back because the owners manual for a new (May, June factory produced) M340s, have instructions for the engine sound setting modification.
I'm on March software and it's not there.
On July 2020 software and it isn't there.

Thanks for letting us know. I presume it's in the July update then, because the owners manual for new 2020 G20s has it.

Aren't the owners manuals for both the 330i and M340i (mine just says "3 Series")? The 330i already has active sound control that you can adjust through iDrive...maybe that's why it's in there.

If you use the BMW Drivers Guide App - it asks you for the VIN. Based on different M340 VINs, the engine sound (under Vehicle Info > Controls > Driving Comfort) is available or not. Like my M340 doesn't have it in the manual. But the new 2020s do.

I still don't understand why they would install adaptive dampers (much more expensive) to vehicles that they aren't charging for it out of the gate.

The cost of Adaptive Dampers have now subsidize, where they can bake it into the cost of the vehicle and AS would allot them more control over the suspension, for programming needs.

BTW, the early 2019 built M340s does indeed have an obnoxious loud ASD; I sometimes put down the windows, so folks outside can hear the "exhaust" from inside the vehicle, since it's almost as resounding as the exterior muffler.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. If this is true, wouldn't the adaptive button next to the shifter have to come standard as well? I haven't seen any that have the button but don't have the "adaptive" part enabled. I get that they can bake in the cost of the option, but it seems like an unusual component to make "software optional". It's like adding all the speakers and amp from the HK stereo upgrade, and only enabling it if you pay the subscription cost.

Good points.

I think what's happening is that the discount/economies of scale of bulk sourcing adaptive suspension parts (rather than adaptive and non adaptive) for all cars, as well as, standardizing assembly line/installation process into one (vs. adaptive vs. non adaptive) is leading to material cost savings - that they're letting every car drive off with this extra hardware. And now they're looking to make some money on top of it by offering subscription to turn it on.

I checked the wheel well of an adaptive M340 vs. a non adaptive M340 and saw zero differences to the exterior suspension components - seem like they have standardized the components already. The difference is that the adaptive cars have magnetorheological (electrically charged) components inside the suspension components.

But @[Burrcold] - you're 100% right - the adaptive suspension subscirption add on is not the 'adaptive M chassis', which gives you the adaptive suspension and adaptive driving mode (with the button). In adaptive driving mode, the ECU adapts the engine, damping, transmission etc. to your driving style and needs. The subscription add on will just give you adaptive damping.

I have a MY2020 M340i with 07.2020.25 iDrive software based in the UK.

This option doesn't exist in my car or the car manual app linked to my VIN.

No idea if it exists is MY2021 cars (built July 2020 onwards)

Thanks for the update.

All the March '20, June '20 and onwards M340s in the US, have the engine sound setting in the car manual app linked by VIN.

But may not be in the actual car, to your point.

FYI, I have a US 2021 M340i built in September 2020, and I do not have the engine sound setting. It'd be nice to have a few more feedback from other owners of 2021 models to see if that's consistent.

I have a UK 330i Sep 2020 build and the owners manual states the engine sound setting is for the electric motor of PHEV cars.

Hi,
My M340 has a manufacture date of 26 Jun 19 & currently has software version 07/2020.45.

Though Bimmercode says ASD is on, I have NEVER heard the artificial piped-in sound.

At one point, I coded two functions in the HG_MGU that was supposed to allow exhaust sound changes, which I could not detect any difference.

As a matter of fact, the only exterior exhaust sound I hear is when I change driving mode to Sport or Adaptive

Am I missing something?

2021 M235i has the option in the menu for ASD, I think the new cars should all have the same software from build.

Are you in the US? My car is running all the most up to date software and doesn’t have the ASD setting in the menu

Yeah the car I saw was a 2021 US spec M235i.

IDK why there would be differences, since all the cars are pretty much copy paste with some tweaks.

So if the option is not showing in iDrive, does that mean there is no sound augmentation?
