Reading this thread gave me a scare.. As all my cars so far ware second hand and they all burn oil.
My E60 535D used to burn 1l every 6200 miles, which wasnt that bad.
However my CLS 55 AMG used 1l every 800 miles...
And now I went for M340 I bought it on 6000 miles- so far I have done
1300 miles and oil seems to be at maximum
View post on imgur.com

I will keep a close eye on this.
When I bought the car on 6200 miles I changed the oil so the car has now one oil change, however they put 0W20 which I suspect is thinner than 5W30 which most of turbocharged engines use. I talk to my dealer to put 5W30, but they told me that this car M340 should be driven only with 0W20.
My drive style is more peaceful than aggressive but still from time to time I'm doing pulls from 0-200 with launch control

Do you all guys drive with 0W20 and what are your feedback with 5W30?

0W20 and 0W30 are both authorized. I executed a break-in oil change at 4500 miles and oil analysis looked awesome. Some wear metals but expected due to the break-in. I refilled with Redline 0W20. I intend to execute another oil analysis at 10k.
The car was engineered for 0W20. Use the oil analysis to validate. I have been seeing posts about concerns and using 5W30. You are more likely to reduce the life of the engine.

Cheers!

Yes the bmw dealer told me the same that the car is engineered to use 0W20 so I guess I will keep using this oil, however the price is quite ... 38 USD for 1 liter, thats quite overprice to be honest. The whole oil change cost aroud 300 USD thats for me in Europe. I bought my car "second hand" on 6200 miles and I did the first oil change. I really hope the guy before me did a good brake-in ..

Mine after 22000 km it show me yesterday that is on minimum and need to add 1L.
I call my dealership to ask what oil I can put, since under the hood is not written ( BMW is very mysterious ), they told me that car was filled in factory with 5W-30 and that when they change oil they put same.
Old castrol LL-4 or new shell LL-12 branded for BMW are both ok for refill.

That's an awful price for oil. Is that BMW OEM oil? I paid $11/quart (945 ml) by buying a case of 12 for Red Line.

That strange my dealers in Bulgaria says that the factory oil for this model specifically M340 is 0W20.. And also 22 000 km ... change it earlier don't wait for 25 000 it's way too much, I wont exceed 12-13k on mine.

I told every1 that the prices here in Europe are outrageous ... We pay 20k more USD for the car then you guys and all the service is like triple more expensive.. So enjoy that you live in USA.

Update I did a trip in total 2800 miles. So the car have now 4400 miles with the new 0W20 oil I put in. iDrive says it is still on the maximum. So far I'm super happy, everything below 1 litter every 6000 miles is OK for me.

New Update: required another quart just now at 14,774miles. Luckily I now keep extras at home for whenever this occurs. So grateful this is a lease, wouldn't want to deal with this longterm.

5th low warning @ 11,900 miles.

That is now a total of 5 quarts w/ just under 12k miles of spirited driving. No real alternative other than to rinse/repeat till I hand back the keys in about 2 years, and no complaints from my end either, but the rate at which this thing guzzles oil does seem a bit excessive for a new car...makes me wonder if M3/M4 will be even worse?

Guys how exactly are you driving your cars? If you push it all the time I guess its normal to burn oil.

And all that burning oil will be turning into carbon on the intake valves just like N54.

First low oil warning at 6400 miles. No prior oil change but may go ahead and schedule it next week once I’m back from the current road trip I’m on. Topped off with Mobil 1 0w-20 synthetic and seems fine for now.

No oil warnings yet at 7300 miles. Oil level is down midway on the gauge.

Sport plus 80% of the time, but I'm not redlining stop light to stop light; I use sport plus mainly for the hair trigger throttle response. The bottom line is the vehicle is being driven (and maintained) within spec. This rate of oil consumption was not expected, even by BMW, until a few months after release of the car when customer complaints started coming in (according to 2 of my local dealerships). Eh; it's manageable for now, but the sheer volume of oil that keeps "disappearing" on a regular basis is definitely something to keep tabs on...

2 quarts by 3200 miles - and I am devil/angel on my shoulder with how I drive my car. Sometimes cool, calm and collected, sometimes not so much. Interestingly I did the same with my first gen B58 (340) and had no oil consumption issues.

Doesn't bother me I always carry a quart in my trunk. Maybe at this point I'll never need an oil change because I'm doing it one quart at a time (that's an attempt at humor - don't take it seriously)

I guess it comes from the style of driving you are saying sport plus 80% of the time, I drive mine mainly comfort and rev it no more then 3000 RMP, from time to time I put it on sport plus and make few full throttles and as I said 4400 miles oil at maximum. I'm sure if you drive it until 3000 RMP in comfort you wont burn that much of oil.
Every car burn a lot of oil if it's pushed, back in the days brand new m5 e60 could burn 1 liter oil for 2 track laps...
I guess the oil consumption is OK, if you have patient try to drive it slower and see if you still burn oil, if it still burn then something is wrong with the engine.

Agreed! As a current F30 owner of a 340i with the OG B58, I never had oil issues. I do have the common low coolant problem though but I only top it off once a year and have not gotten any warnings.

I'm watching this thread to see how this plays out as I do want to step up to a G20 M340i in the next 2 years. Good luck folks and hope BMW sorts this out with their LCI release in the next 2 years.

Service rep told me it's normal in M and M-performance cars to require a quart or two in between 10K oil service so I didn't have to do an oil change yet.

I'm thinking to buy Pennzoil Euro-L Platinum (BMW LL01 as per owners manual) but its a 5W-30 grade. Is this safe to top up with if my local dealer uses a 0w-20 grade for an oil change? SA didn't know which grade they would use for my car.

5600 miles so far with the new 0W20 oil, oil level is still at max. I will change the oil in 1k miles. At how much miles you change your oil guys. I would go for 6-6500 miles since after this I guess the oil loose a lot of his lubricant quality.

Checking in here from a thread I created concerned about the oil consumption. Didn’t find this one but thanks to a member shared a link.

I have a 2020 M340i and do not drive in Sport, Sport Plus or redline everyday. I do spirited driving every now and then but not how I used to with all my previous M3s. Usually just in comfort because I’m on side streets or on highway in traffic.

Service Advisor told me it’s normal and to buy a quart and leave in the trunk especially for long trips. I still feel it’s odd I have to keep adding a quart of oil in between oil changes. I’m currently at 12k miles and had one oil change done back in November. I would imagine the new G80 M3 will have the same issue since there are 2 turbos.
