The new grille

Grille sort of reminds me of two of these (from an automotive legend)! What's wrong with just making a beautiful car, e.g. Aston Martin? Looks like they're trying too hard to be different, or from another point of view be like Toyota/Lexus/Audi. As an architect I hate designs that are different just to be different with no apparent justification.

As mentioned earlier in this thread:

https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...&postcount=752

Even Aston Martin has gone big with the grill. Like the tall BMW grill, the wide mouth on the Aston would appear to be arbitrary and largely to the determent of the vehicle's aesthetic.

Picture from above post:

Just about every automaker is going big and bold on the front of the vehicle these days. BMW's may not even be the worst. A Silverado Z71, for example, now literally has no body color left on the front anymore - the entire thing is grill and headlights. It's a trend that, for better or worse, is proliferating throughout the industry.

Exactly.....because that Aston isn't beautiful. It still reminds me of a gape-mouth shark.

Because even beautiful can become boring and at least temporarily be replaced by exciting, new and interesting. Look no further than husbands cheating on stunning wifes with so-so looking mistresses for validation of this phenomena...at least with cars no one is hurt in the process

I don’t mind the grill per say but the rest of the Vantage is too soft and feminine for an Aston IMO. Astons for me are English muscle cars, brawny cars for hairy chested macho men that handles so-so. Some of them even look like Mustangs

The body of the vantage look more like an overgrown Miata coupe and I can’t picture Sean Connery in a Miata...

Maybe on the Aston but definitely not on the M3/4....maybe this is just a publicity stunt

Glad he* is here none the less
It was THE 4/i4 I saw first and at first I did not fall completely in love with it. It was until I kept on seeing it, I got used to it and certainly it is eye-catching to say the least. It was a shock to the system at first but as it became familiar I begun to understand and accept its appearance.

When I saw the M3 the past few weeks ago. I was already conditioned to knowing what the car would appear like having seen THE 4.
It was less of a shock. But what makes the M3 work is the Aerodynamic package that compliments the Grilles. It's an all new look and it is far more aggressive than what we have had previously.

Some may think that the i4 might work better because of its closed Grille. So you don't have the vertigo of either the bars or the wide sheet of diamond cut pieces of the M440i.

Thanks for the reply and certainly understand. Its radical, though the more we see it, the more we accept it and then it looks less radical. Its a big gamble but time will tell if it was a smart bet.

We wait to see the full on views and in the metal pix to see if it makes sense as a package..till then, we’ll play and wait

  1. We are on this BMW board because we are passionate about BMW and so if we see something that is at odds with that passion - like the grotesque grille - then we will speak up about it. The day BMW fans stop speaking up is the day we stop caring and that's when BMW should start to worry.
  2. This thread is about a leaked photo showing that grille and people are reacting to it. So if you don't what to hear those reactions (or whining as you put it), then, rather than whining about the whiners, you can easily avoid this by not clicking on this thread in the first place.

I don't think it is purely the size of the grill that is bothering people, I think it is the design. As others have displayed, many auto manufacturers are going with larger grills, some are just doing a better job of integrating the design. The M3/M4 grill does not flow well and looks very tacky. It appears as if it is an afterthought and slapped on.

I love it. I like to see them pushing the envelope and make serious changes. More aggressive, especially for the M model. The M3 hasn’t changed much over the years, vaguely different from the previous versions time after time. Good to see BMW going away from slight tiny iterations to a completely new look! I’ll be a buyer in 2021.

No comment on the rather dramatic accusation that you are a shill for BMW marketing (rather than an insider trying to help the enthusiast community from losing our minds)? lol

Agree with this 100%, it is not just that he feels the need to be correct about something that will be proven fact soon (I do agree that the grill will look like he says), but he feels the need to convince others that their OPINION on the appearance is wrong. It really has made coming to the forums annoying and frustrating where you can't even express an opinion on a car forum, that is the primary purpose of the site.

Bangle cars were sold during a massive economic bubble, correct? The Bangle 7 was produced from 2002-2008. When you compare sales of them, are you comparing same model sales vs prior periods, or as a percentage of market share vs competitors?

How have the Bangle cars held in value over time vs prior iterations? In my region they seem to have depreciated at a faster rate, but went out of production during a recession.

Were the increased sales due to significant discounts and trunk money from BMW to move cars that had been over produced, with the assumption that the economy was pointing towards spending on new luxury vehicles?

I think the context here was mainly if the car was a sales flop since it was controversial and arguably ugly. The answer is that it wasn’t. It was quietly a big success while many BMW fans wringed their hands in anguish or put fire on their cars...

The details you are asking for? No idea

The earlier Bangle 7's had electrical issues that impacted resale. It wasn't the looks.

I don't think you can call it a big success then. Comparing generations of the same vehicle based on sales makes very little sense if the overall number of luxury cars being sold increases, but market share decreases. There are other variables that drive pure sales numbers (global economics/China's growth, gas prices, etc).

I don't think there are many examples of one generation of an existing vehicle with a history of production completely flopping, historically the sales disasters are associated with a launch of a new model designation.

In my opinion I would be measuring the cars success based on market share gained/lost. I wonder why there has not been a simple public poll posted on here with simple a Yes/No of people who are/will be in the market for a car in this segment and if they like it or dont like it.
