G20 M340i Cooling Feature

Hey guys, I recently took my M340 on a road trip and being in southern California the temps got all the way up to 120 degrees (49 C)! One thing that I noticed is how the car reacted to the extremely hot weather. Usually my oil temps vary anywhere from 226 - 232 Fahrenheit and coolant anywhere from 200 - 220 Fahrenheit. As soon as it started heating up outside I want to say around 110 degrees everything started to drop. Keep in mind I have 4 people in the car, A/C on full blast, and a two and a half hour road trip. My Oil Temp dropped dead to 210 and got down to 206 at one point and coolant temp was lingering around 190 - 195. And no I don't have the ZTK package that features the extra oil cooler. Never seen temps this low with similar circumstances in any weather under 110 degrees. Pretty cool how it realized how hot it was outside and to my guess started circulating the coolant and oil much faster almost as what MHD does with the "sport cooling" feature. First time I noticed this within my year of ownership, thought it would be cool to share and if anyone else has had a similar experience. Thanks!

This is really great to hear, especially for me considering I'm about to move to Arizona with 120+ temps through the summers!

If you have a draggy or something, it would be interesting to do a few runs right before you go and then once you move there, just to see how much the heat effects these cars.

I've also noticed this exact thing. Temp seem a bit passed mid. I was pushing the car on some back roads for about an hour and it had dropped down.

I think it reacts to the temp and driving style to cool the car down quicker. Didn't have any issue staying cool even after about an hour and some.

Very cool indeed.

But do you have e85 available? I'm in Canada and you can't find it anywhere, unless you wanna buy drums of it.

I've noticed this also when I go on spirited drives in the canyons. The car actually runs cooler there than it does with normal commuting. I've never seen temps go above 230 in this car. Though I do have the ztk pkg

I think it runs higher temps for efficiency and lower temps for performance or preservation operating modes. With the high ambient temps or higher boost usage, it may be trying to avoid detonation by running the block cooler.

Makes sense engineers would do that. Take care of a problem before it becomes one.
