How important is it to cool down before turning off the engine?

I've been reading and watching that with a turbo charger, one should let the engine cool down before turning off because that helps the oil to circulate and dissipate heat. Not doing this seems to lead to premature turbo failure.

I've seen recommendations from 30 seconds to a couple minutes. My question is, in routine commuter driving situations where revs usually seem to sit around 1.5-2k rpm, maybe up to 3k starting from a red light, how important is this?

I want to maintain the car as well as possible, but finding it an adjustment to sit around after stopping. I've never had a turbocharged engine before, even a recent hybrid is naturally aspirated. I will do it, but it will certainly be a bigger problem for the wife.

Any perspectives? Thanks

you are way overthinking this. Go to the grocery store, park, turn it off and go inside. There is no reason to baby it to this extent

That was more a relic of the past (turbo timers). Our cars have separate cooling circuits for the turbo and the engine (we have two coolant reservoirs) and the fans keeps running after turning the car off. At least that's how I understand it. Probably best not to flog the car immediately before shutting it off though.

Here's some more info on the subject https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comment...after_driving/.

I agree with the above response. During your routine commute, no need to let it idle. Arrive at location and shut off car. After driving a hot lap at the track, I’ll either do a cool down lap or drive slowly in the pits to allow the motor/turbo to come down in temp, and then shut off.

The low pressure cooling system which cools the intercooler and turbo has an electric water pump to circulate water even when the engine is off.

The fan keeps running even after you turn the car off. Don’t worry about it!
