Dyno results/review - G20 330i w/ Turbo Transformer Tune
After weeks of looking around and hours of going down endless rabbit holes, I finally decided to install and test out the boost-controller (piggyback) from www.turbo-transformer.com . The installation was simple and I was looking for something that I could install and uninstall myself. I was also looking for something that would give me a considerable boost in low-end to mid-range torque and something that suits my driving style.
I had also considered a DINANTRONICS Sport and BMS JB4 and I also for a moment considered the ECU flash route, but decided to go with this because of the apps ability to log and track boost pressure. I’ve had the TT on my car for about 3 weeks and I can feel the power gain all the way to redline, although the difference in the mid-range is very noticeable in every driving mode. It even makes Eco-pro somewhat usable in bumper to bumper and non-freeway driving. I was also able to test it out on Sport+ after some bimmercoding, but the torque was too overwhelming because of the super aggressive downshifts in Sport+. To see how much of a difference this thing made, I slapped my G20 330i on a dyno; here are the results - T-T setting at +3 psi: 290 hp, 360 lb-ft Stock (baseline run): 252 hp, 290 lb-ft Performance gains: +39 hp, +70 lb-ft I considered upping it to +4 psi but decided against it after their customer support said that +3 psi is optimal for most driving conditions. Since my car is fairly new and in warranty, I didn’t want to push it beyond a certain safety margin. I have more pictures and video, in the meantime here’s a dyno plot for now. If any of you have questions about setup / performance, shoot me a reply or a dm. Edit: We did measure 292 hp in one of the runs, attaching the .txt file here. I did request the shop to send me a corresponding plot but I am still waiting for their response. We didn't use that for an A-B comparison because the plot looked somewhat ugly. custom 4th 2 - G20noob.Txt Edit: 01/25/2021 - Adding a link to the video Thanks, G20noob Last edited by G20noob; 01-25-2021 at 06:34 PM.. |

I have the delta at +3 psi; base 7.7 psi, slope of 0.4. I use ECO mode a lot; combined with the TT, I love how the car pulls without downshifting.

Nice to see a dyno of a piggyback finally! Those numbers are really impressive, especially if those are whp and wtq. Now if only we could get some dragy 0-60/0-100/quarter mile times
But seriously. Very good numbers! And excellent job.

I haven't been able to dyno my car since the ones near me (upto 1.5hrs away) are all 2WD dynos. I've used virtual dyno and my car's baseline (map 0 on JB4) was 225/246 and with map 6 (without EWG connector), it was 285/310. Runs logged on the same day, just a few minutes apart. With the EWG connector and updated map 6 (on a different day), it was 299/327 (all numbers are whp/wtq). Again, this was using virtual dyno and not an actual Dyno (though VD is supposedly pretty damn accurate if logged correctly and I did manage to get the tyre diameters, weight and gearing along with temperatures for the respective days online to set it up to be as close to an actual dyno run as possible). Smoothing was also set at a higher number since lower smoothing showed higher numbers and I don't believe I've hit 300whp on stage 1. I don't doubt those numbers much since it's significantly faster than my stock SQ5 (354bhp/369tq) and even my stock A7 (333bhp/325tq) even though they're heavier cars. Fuel used is 93 octane for stock run and roughly E25 (3.5gallons E85 and rest 93 octane for a full tank) for the map 6 runs. No weight reduction. Those runs were done on a full tank, usually with atleast one passenger (excluding driver) in the car. I had these numbers saved in my notepad but can't find dyno pics since it was on an old phone. I might have the logs I used to calculate those numbers. If not, I'll have to do one later when it is warm and post updated results.

At the end of the day the best best comparison is something like 20-80mph or maybe 40-100mph since it largely eliminates traction and “skill” from the equation. A BUNCH of stuff affects whp on a dyno. The same car on a dyno with different set of wheels/tire which are same diameter but different weight can read 20hp different (this isn’t “fake” it’s real, you need to expend more energy to spin up the heavier wheel/tire combo so you ARE putting “less” power to the road). If you run the dyno at 200kph vs 100kph you’ll also have an appreciable difference in whp holding EVERYTHING else constant. It’s actually a bit ironic that the “backed out” engine power figures are slightly more “accurate” IF AND ONLY IF the calculation is done properly (which is effectively impossible in an automatic transmission) which most new dynos are capable of doing but still requires the operator to do it properly which is surprisingly rare (you’re supposed to clutch in on the coast down and not leave it in gear in a manual, in an auto there really isn’t a “good” option, before anyone’s asks, no shifting to neutral is not the same thing). |

My interpretation of the chart would be:
T-T setting at +3 psi: 278 hp, 360 lb-ft Stock (baseline run): 252 hp, 290 lb-ft Performance gains: +26 hp, +70 lb-ft |

And I personally don't pay much attention to dyno numbers. I'd rather go by performance box numbers Quote:

You're right. I didn't look at the numbers on the graph. Just the curve of the graph. I looked at the numbers at the bottom and thought they might have messed the order of the runs or something. But yes. Still very good for just a piggyback.

This may sound dumb-but does your ECU adjust to the added boost and over time drop it down somewhat? I have a JB+ at 3 o’clock and wondering if it just figures it out and adjusts. Definitely became smoother over time, but also infrequently push the car hard.

I have had mine for a year or so and I see a solid 21.9 psi peak (from the TT app). However, the JB+ only intercepts 1 sensor so I don't know what your outcome is, adaptation wise. The TT intercepts 2 sensors - the boost sensor AND the manifold pressure sensor (like a JB4 or DINAN Sport or Racechip).

Unfortunately we don't have 93 octane here in CA (not sure why our fuel prices are the highest, for the lowest quality fuel!!) There's like one gas station in Sunol that sells 94, 96, 98 and 100 octane. I haven't been adventurous enough to try a higher boost pressure, their customer support said that +3psi is a optimal. The difference is noticeable, my wife was in the passenger seat with us in Sport+ mode and I dropped from 5th to 4th and hit the gas and she was like, 'what is Wrong with you' - So much fun to see that reaction haha! |

Hey, I have this too, but I'm having a hard time figuring where to put the box after I install it. Had it in for about a month before I needed to take it out for service, and I found it had deformed from the heat. Any suggestions about where to stick it?
