So I have a g26 m440i gc xdrive. And I just got it repaired under warranty to fix a pretty obvious clunk noise from driveline every time there is a load reversal. The dealer replaced the rear diff but the noise was still there. After several days of examination. They decided to replace the transfer case and the noise issue is solved. I started to notice the noise at around 8000 miles which is really low mileage. So I felt like I might just be unlucky about this specific car.
However, recently I’ve got a rental bmw which is a 2024 X4 30i xdrive on a trip (around 8000 miles on the odometer and sharing the same transfer case according to the parts number) and it also has a similar noise under load reversal. That makes me wonder if this specific transfer case is prone to having noise issues.
I just want to share my experience here in case anyone else is trying to diagnose a similar problem. And I’m also kinda curious on why this would happen. Am I really that unlucky to have two cars with potentially the same issue?
