They went ahead and installed a new diff for me as well … I have a 2020 MHD stage2 … X drive. . Did they mention a break in period ?
No, it's fully stock car.
i asked for break in period and they said: that is not necessary, because it's only a new cover.

Im just trying to get a good number for a break in mileage since my whole rear diff got replaced. My local shop who does my mods said 300 miles , another friend with an M3 told me 300 miles , my SA said about 1200-1500 miles lol. Long story short it’s hard not to pin this beast to the floor ! Aha

I am in the same situation as you Stage 2 and diff has been leaking and developed a clunk/whine at low speeds. I'm gonna take to dealer and hope they replace this is ridiculous, wish there was a service bulletin.

I am not sure why these dealers are so hesitant to replace the diff cover? It isn't even that expensive. I had mine replaced after the 4th visit and it's all good now.

What do you mean calibrate diff? Isn't it just the change of the cover and refilling fluid? First time hearing of a diff recalibration can anyone elaborate?

There is no "diff cover" recalibration. They just forced an update on you.
The diff cover is held on with a sealant. They just remove it and replace it and then re-add fluid once the sealant has cured. The same way the lower oil pan is held on to the upper pan.

so, unfortunately they put something back together wrong when they tried to reseal the factory cover and misaligned something and thought calibrating would help. if its done properly, it shouldn't need recalibration. In my case it did because the dealer messed up the installation of the cover.

Im sorry to hear that .. my originally went in for the TS bulletin for the longer updated breather tube ..

I had warranty remaining and a friend as well. They replaced my diff.

What year is your car ? And curious to your power numbers as well as mileage .. also X drive ? … For the clunk and whining noise is kinda strange ..

2020 M340I RWD. 41K miles as it sits. DP + E85 tune power numbers are supposed to be high 4's to low 5's never been on dyno. I have noticed the seeping residue on diff since early on into ownership. Now has dried up into a thick grease like residue leak doesn't seem to be active anymore. I think it leaked out to the point where it's not active anymore almost as if not enough diff fluid inside lol if that makes sense. After looking up part number this cover is cheap enough that I can finish the job at a independent place and not risk getting locked at dealer. The clunk is only taking off from a complete stop at low speeds up to only a few miles an hour. Goes away when warmed up along with the whine. Will keep it updated.

Umm so 41k miles and you have a clunk and a whine from your diff. In my world that's an issue. Shouldn't happen and I wouldn't drive it much til I sorted it. But that's just me. Hopefully it's nothing, right.

I seen my rear diff little wet originally- threw it on a lift and used a mirror and seen it was spitting oil from the top vent breather hole … brought it in.. eventually it would of been dry if I hadn’t checked.. I ran pump93 and I’m very on top of my car almost obsessive tbh and every time I did rolls and just hard hard runs or digs I’d get under it with cardboard and look around at axles and seals, and the rear diff and check for any fluids .. now im running e40 mix and def checking my car on my buddy’s lift as needed

Goodluck to you I wish you the best. Try and make a friend at service if you have warranty. They shouldn’t have to plug your car in to replace the diff leaking or clunking by the way. Things can be done with a gracious tip and a good attitude 👍🏽

Rear Diff Leak

Does any one know if the updated diff cover is any different from original? I just don see how a diff cover can solve the leaking from the vent hole.
Any info is appreciated. Thank you

Replacing the diff cover stopped my leak but I don't have the old one to compare what the difference is.

Update: My diff ran low on fluid I guess before BMW replaced my diff cover finally (after 4 visits to them). After some time I started noticing I am getting a weird metal type sound at WOT. The car drove fine otherwise. Took it to BMW again and the tech confirmed there is a sound at WOT. They opened the diff and it was full of metal. Bmw said it failed internally and replaced my entire diff. So now I am breaking in my new differential. The warranty covered the entire thing but the part cost $6000 alone! The total cost out of warranty would have been ~$9000. Glad I took it in for that before my warranty ended. Ps the car is tuned and has a downpipe but my service advisor is cool about it. Otherwise, they would deny that warranty claim.
