I'll tell Manuel not to bother reading emissions and take the car to the dealer - it should still be under full service coverage. |

So CEL in a bone stock car? I’d take it to the dealer then.

So here was the reason for the CEL.. it was actually an emissions part, a pressure switch for the leak detection pump.
Car has 8k miles. Seems very soon for these sorts of issues. |

I had one recently also, but I have a catted downpipe so was worried that might be the cause.
I pulled the code using bimmerlink and it said Crankcase ventilation system: leakage detected. I had done Oil change service at the dealer just a week prior. Removed engine cover to inspect and observed oil all over the engine and pooled up in certain areas. Was also smelling burning oil which this explains why. Dealer inspected it, said I had no leak and attributed it to recent oil change. Tightened some screws and pressure washed the engine bay and cleared the code. A couple days in and no code yet - So far so good |

If so, that's probably why you have the CEL. Check it after driving for a bit spiritedly. Don't turn the car off. Leave the car on and see. If it's closed, it probably means it isn't working which is why there's a CEL.

Thanks, I’ll take a look this morning. Ive got the drive home tomorrow, if it’s the grill would you be concerned or just call for the roadside assistance? Is the a manual way to open the grill that you know of?

The only way I know is to unplug the connector but the grill has to be open for that. You can drive with it closed. Just don't drive spiritedly since it can raise temps a lot and that might be bad for the engine. But yes. Drive normally and you should be fine, especially if your ambient temps are low.

Thanks for the thoughts. The grill is remaining closed, I called BMW and they agreed it’s okay to drive as long as behaviour is normal and temps are reading okay. (Which they are). Interestingly they didn’t seem surprised with the grill issue - Sounds like it could be a thing! I’m driving from Banff Ab to Edmonton tomorrow in ambient temps with are 0c at the moment.

UPDATE: The drive home was uneventful and the car operated as normal. The light has stayed on all the way home, I washed the car, and the light on the dash disappeared. It did come back on after half a day. I brought the car into BMW today who diagnosed the problem as the lower radiator blind being mechanically damaged. The part is coming in from Vancouver tomorrow. Covered under warranty as its a fault. I've seen on other BMW enthusiast sites similar experiences.

Confirmed by BMW as fault in the radiator blind, lower limit position not detected. “Checked for PuMA measures, found measure 64841529. Measure identifies that lower air flaps may have mechanical defect. Lifted vehicle verified lower air blinds have detached at movement mechanism. S1 64 705. Replaced lower radiator blinds. Confirmed a 10 year warranty is valid for these parts.
