You must take into consideration that oil choice for manufacturers first and foremost depends on how emissions are calculated. The US has CAFE which encourages use of thin oils. EU has different ways of calculating emissions, which is not dependent on thickness of oil as much. Hence, in Europe all these manufacturers recommend different oils with few exceptions. |

edycol Can I have your opinion on the following oils:
Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-30 Castrol EDGE Euro 5W-30 A3/B4 Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic 5W-30 This is for an incoming 2022 330i - which would be the best oil to use?

One of the many reasons this discussion always gets confusing is that manufacturers may recommend different oil specs for cars in the US, Canada and Europe, even though they are the same car. My assumption is that means all of them are acceptable, but country-unique emissions or fuel economy standards are driving the recommendations. US specs for all manufacturers seem to be strongly influenced by CAFE standards.

Pennzoil Platinum Euro. It is more sophisticated oil.

According to Pennzoil's US website, as far as 5W-30 viscosity is concerned, Platinum Euro meets the LL-01 standard, whereas the Platinum Euro L meets the LL-04 standard. It is not always clear which one is being referred to in various online discussions or offered for sale on the web.

Pennzoil has both in 5W30 grade, but LL01 is really hard to find. Considering that Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 is very thin 40 oil, there is no point of looking for one. |

Warranty: LL17FE or if manual allows LL01FE, go that. Just get from local dealership or if LL01FE, go Motul Specific 5W30 LL01FE. No warranty: any LL04 or LL01. In Wal Mart you have Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30. Change every 5 k. Motul X-Clean+ 5W30 is super choice but available online! LL01 is so called Full SAPS oil. Currently I would go Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 (local Auto Zone could have deal) or Motul X-Cess 5W40 GEN2. But ANY approved LL01 will do it. |

Higher HTHS=more protection. But, you don't want to go too crazy as higher HTHS=more resistance =lower mpg. If manual mentions LL01 FE (FE=Fuel economy) use LL01 (without FE designation). Generally LL04 is just low-SAPS version of LL01 (DPF/GPF compatible). It is thick version of LL17FE. Why BMW doesn't mention LL04 as option in manual in US, I don't know. In Europe B58 runs on LL04 not LL17FE. |

I just got an x6 2022 xdrive40 and trying to do the oil change. My n55 I use 5W40 Leichtlauf High Tech Engine Oil.. on the B58 engines I heard you need to use LL14FE oil. Is that correct?

I've been running Liquimoly Leichtlauf 5w-40 last oil change, no complaints besides mpg dropping a bit which is to be expected with thicker viscosity. Prior to that used factory 0W-30. No oil burning issues, always comes out clean and full amount every oil change (5-7K intervals). It seemed to quiet things down as well especially cold start, now all I hear is injectors ticking which is normal on high pressure direct injectors.
