BMW vs MB

This question is for those of you who have had recent models of both BMWs and Mercedes. I like driving my 2020 M340, it is about to hit 40k. It is running great at the moment. While I haven't had any major failures there are a lot of little bugs with it: Sunroof rattles, issues with software, a mirror motor that failed and crashed part of the network, etc. The dealer has been decent to work with but BMW itself has really not been of much assistance. I haven't been impressed for what is supposed to be a premium brand. Is Mercedes any better? I will probably trade this year and am considering what to get.

Thanks

Are the issues covered by new-car warranty?

To date yes, though the new car warranty just ran out. I am now into the CPO warranty which will not cover many of the things that seem to go wrong. Also, in total the car has spent about over 2 of the last 12 months at the dealer. They did give me a loaner. In my opinion that is a excessive given the mileage and cost of the car.

Spend some time on the MB boards. Look at the debacle they have on their hands with the new lines. Battery failures, record lemon buybacks, and 29th place in CR reliability rankings. Even with margin of error this is an absolute failure.

Also to add, the MBUSA website won't even allow you to build a 2024 C43. Still showing 2023. It's a mess.

From what I read, it's worse.

Also I think every car model has issues, take your pick.

New MB, especially the C-class, are a mess and not very reliable. Unless you just love spending time at the dealership, steer clear of them.

BMW is the best reliability-wise among the Germans, as far as I know. And MB is the worst of them all. Perhaps give BMW another chance or try out something Japanese for a change?

Consumer Reports just rated BMW #1 encompassing Road Test Scores, Predicted Reliability, and Owner Satisfaction. MB was #29 of 34.
My wife will only drive a MB. She has a 2018 E400 Coupe which was purchased new and currently has a little over 28k mileage. I've had to deal with little things like the lights on the bottom of both doors falling out, Nav screen not booting up and replacing one arm of the power trunk. Beautiful looking car but I am disappointed in the quality. My neighbor has a new C300 and it seems to have been in the shop very often.

I do think MB makes the better looking interiors. Other than that it's not even close for me. Granted, you are on a BMW forum...

True that. Until you touch them, though. Not sure how they get away with those materials. Also, I dislike the UI of their infotainment - brings me back memories of Windows XP, but I guess that's a fairly small gripe.

I'll give Mercedes something, though - their tech is really ahead of the game and is probably one of the bigger reasons for their fairly low reliability. AR HUD, 3D effect virtual cockpit, projecting digital matrix lights with thousand of pixels, etc.

I did not realize that BMW is rated #1 overall on CR. Doesn’t get much better than that.

I tell people that my BMW is head, neck, and shoulders better than any car I’ve ever owned. CR gets it. It just does everything right. There’s a reason I couldn’t keep that IS 500 and ended up going back to my M440i GC… BMW just makes a better car.

Given the repair history u can decide to exit or not.

I have a friend that has a '23 C class and although she loves it, she visits the dealer way more often than I think she should for various issues that so far, have been covered under warranty. Not sure how she will feel after the warranty ends.

Can't make your decision for you but if there was a jump to be made, I would probably go japanese as opposed to Daimler but then there are trade-offs on that side as well.

Used to be. Now it’s cheap shit that squeaks eveywhere with a giant screen somewhere. Been inside a e class, it feels really cheap than what it used to be

My girl had a 2019 Mercedes and she loved the interior lights and screen etc.. but the transmission was jerky. We had to bring it in multiple times for software and recalls. Anytime she drove the BMW she would mention how much more responsive and smooth it was compared to her car. All of our BMWs have been solid.

Yea, just in the research phase now. I may end up with another BMW but it's good to see what else is out there. I do like driving the car but don't like dealing with the rattles and little stuff that breaks. I have looked at Japanese cars but unfortunately haven't found anything that interests me. It's too bad that BMW isn't a bit more reliable. I would be perfectly happy paying $5k more in exchange for a more robust car. My 2020 has spent more time in the shop than any other vehicle I have owned (all little stuff). That includes about 15 saabs, several older MBs, GM trucks, and an e90. Of course, if everything else that is any fun to drive is worse than there is no use in getting it.

Might be little off, but Id get Audi. I had one and have BMW now. Also upset how BMW build inside cabin. Just does not feel premium. Right now had same issue with rattles and other minor BS that I had to deal with. Just like soviet era Lada

With VAG had 0 issues with this. We also have x5 and it surprisingly build much better and just feel to the car is better over all. I am considering to swap to something like x5m or x5 m50

Agree with Audi. Understated class, tight steering and a great interior. Not as robust as a BMW engine and construction. But close.
