I expected it to be a bit faster than my M440i GC. No... it feels like it's twice as fast. It pulls HARD. The torque is immediate and relentless. What was really amazing was that it was just as smooth and easy to drive as my M440i GC. It felt nearly identical... just way, way, way faster.

The i4 M50 is easily one of BMW's best models. I drove an M3 Comp and an XM, and I preferred the i4 M50 to both of them.

I have had mine for just over 1000 km. I love it!

As others have said, it is not a sports car. If you expect it to drive like one, you will be disappointed. It is an M-Performance sedan... and a heavy one at that. But it is bonkers fast in acceleration, and I find the ride very nice. Interior is nice BMW 4 series finish, not super luxury but very good quality.

As I said, you feel the weight. Maybe not when it jumps like a go kart off the line or when passing, but in fast lane changes, cornering or braking. When I want to have that more sporty feel, I go for a ride in the OG M2. There was a lot of talk about the M2 weight when it came out... but sure feels light now!!

I get tons of compliments on the Sanremo Green colour. Very happy with that choice. With the blue eyes (laser) and Oyster interior it looks awesome.

It has idiosyncrasies, but don't we all? Nothing that really registers with me. I am used to the little wtf? moments with BMW. Part of their charm 😉.

Thanks for the details. Greatly appreciated. Would you be able to post the photo of Sanremo Green color?

I don't know fast in a straight line but pretty lumbering in and out of corners ... I am super happy with getting an e40 instead of the m50i bc I saved money, got more range and didn't convince myself that the driving experience of an m50 would be even close to an m4. In a perfect world my commuter is an e40 and my weekend car and track day car is an m4.

Nobody here is going to use an i4 M50 as a track car. That will literally destroy the tires. The car is too heavy to be a track car, and you would have to have a fast charger on standby for use after each stint on the track.. But as a daily driver with occasional stints on backroads? It's pretty damn good. Again, I am comparing it to my M440i GC first and foremost. I have no doubt that the M3 Comp would destroy it on a track or backroads, but for daily driving, the i4 M50 would definitely be quicker and more comfortable.

iX owner here. Can confirm the implementation is the same between the i4 and iX. In fact 95% of the discussions you guys have here are the same as the ones we have on the iX forum. I spend half my time here with you guys since the topics are so similar!!

In short: BMW has room to improve, but it’s still best car I’ve ever had. I look forward to driving it every day!

This is good to know. My wife took the IX for a test drive (she wants more space to carry more people comfortably) and I was in the back and passenger seat at times. After messing with the Idrive for a bit I realized not much has changed.

My favorite feature in the IX is the cubbys for the cell phone. I discovered it when I was in the front passenger seat. Whoever came up with that should get a huge bonus!

It's my preferred city driving mode, pretty much all I use in town / off the highways.

My wife has done this twice!! I am betting she doesn't press the Start/Stop button to shut down like I do. Maybe it happens when you just put in park and get out?

I attended M Town event in my area and finally drove i4M 50. While waiting for i4 M50, I also drove the new XM (a story for another day).

The i4 M5 available for the test drive was (ironically) the same if I were to order one today: grey exterior with red leather. Did not take a note of exact colors. Focused on experiencing and appreciating the car dynamics.

i4 M50 exceeded my expectations.

The test drive route did not include any highways, just local roads with the predictably heavy Friday afternoon traffic. I used B mode and liked it.

It's unfortunate that there aren't enough allocations for i4 M50. The dealer where the event was hosted did not have a single allocation in 2023.

By any chance, was that the "Disrupt LA BMW X Chemical Guys Car Meet" they had in Torrance last week? I was going to attend as well, but I felt that as an EV owner my "M" isn't real and lost confidence!

It was a different event sponsored by BMW. If you want to participate, just Google M Town and sign up in your area. I had a blast although I did not have time to drive M3.

Same exact sentiments here. I'm fine in the i4 99% of the time. It's just when I'm in the car approaching 2 hours or so I start to wish it was an i5, or if I want it to be sporty in any way other than a stoplight hero (i.e. top-end power or cornering), that I wish I had a real M car again.

Yes lumbering in and out of corners is an accurate description but I think that applies to i4 in general:

m50 - 5049lb
e40 - 4685lb
e35 - 4553lb

https://www.ultimatespecs.com/car-sp...-eDrive35.html

These are 1000lb more than the G20 330i/M340i ang G8* M3/M4.

I feel bad for anyone who can't have fun taking an m50 through the twisties. It's certainly more of a workout than my old CS, but still loads of fun and you can go plenty fast.

But even then I noticed if the front doors are not fully closed the I4 will not let you drive off, it will instantly turn off and engage the parking brake. I think most people have lost sight of what a car is. For me personally I want a car that happens to be electric (if that makes sense). We had a 2013 Nissan Leaf from new and loved it (this leads into why the B-mode is useless)

The B-mode on the Leaf was as it should be, less regen close to 100% state of charge while it gradually increased the regen as the state of charge dropped. The I4 doesn't do this, not only is it jerky, the transition from the electric motor to the mechanical brakes is terrible (comparing this to the technology that Nissan was using 10 years ago) I expected the BMW to be much better and it's not.
Same thing with all the new BMWs. They slam the car in park when you open the door. Has been like this for years on many of the models. On some models, as long as you have your seat belt buckled, it won't slam into park. The i4 turns off the power for safety.

No one is going to agree with your on the regen. I had a LEAF. It is actually remarkable the i4 has dependable stopping reduction in B mode regardless of the SOC. That actually takes additional engineering to make it do that. With adaptive and B mode, you have the best of both worlds. I use both, depending on my mood.

More of a workout can be an understatement given the twisties, e.g. a coworker brought his M50 to his favorite hilly Hwy 17 and almost lost it amidst downhill blind curves. He traded his F80 M3 for the M50 but now is searching for a M car to trade back to.
