I need it to open my gates because clicking a button is so 1999
I remember the dealer saying that will come with the October update (last year) but no mention of it anywhere, guess they never said which year |

I think there could be a misunderstanding about this feature. I may be wrong but from what I have read you can ask Alexa (in your house) to unlock/lock your car etc, maybe pre-condition your interior etc. I don't think you can talk to Alexa from in the car and ask it stuff. So it's a one-way thing, from Alexa to car, not car to Alexa. I may be wrong.

I am about 99.9% sure it is in car.
The home alexa was connected even to my F30 long time ago. It will be able to be called from the car. Currently if I hold the mic button on the steering wheel it actually activates Alexa on my phone (as it is the default voice assistant) but pointless because: a) the phone needs to be unlocked b) it doesn't mute the sound to wait for a command |

I'm on November 2019 software. Hope you're right about the Alexa function but I've not seen anything from BMW that confirms the functionality as you understand it. Especially not for the 3-series.

In the UK BMW tell you nothing, its all a big secret, even the dealers know very little. If you ask BMW one person will tell you "Oh yes it was pulled but now its back and you can download it" Put the phone down and call again, get someone else and they will tell you exactly the opposite. I have it on good authority it is coming back later this year. |

I'm not sure about the exact steps for your specific BMW model, but I believe it depends on the car's software and features. It might be worth checking with your BMW dealer or visiting their official website for any updates or options. I found a cool website that publishes articles on various technologies and platforms, including how to make the most out of your car's systems. You might find some useful tips there, check it out at https://multitechverse.com/. Let's hope someone with more BMW expertise chimes in soon and helps us out.

FWIW, I installed an Alexa Auto in my car ages ago; just upgraded to the new version, too. If you're already using it at home, it's pretty convenient, not just for seamlessly playing the same music ("Alexa, play Spotify" will resume whatever you were playing in the house when you get into the car, and vice versa), but also for any Alexa-driven home automation you've set up. (I turn on the air conditioning while on my way home from the beach, for instance.)
