Non-RFT Tires?
Hi All. I'm considering a new M340i X-Drive (coming out of an S4) and was planning to go with the 19" M Double Spoke Wheels with Summer non-RFTs (based on a prior 335i I had with RFTs - they were terrible) and get a separate winter setup for the cold months.
Luckily, the dealer had a 330i with the non-RFTs in the showroom and I thought to open the trunk. The enclosure for the donut takes up probably 25% of the trunk by raising the entire floor, turning a generously sized trunk into one that is not practical for a daily driver. It is really ridiculous. My S4 has a donut below the floor and a full-sized trunk. If I had brought that car home my wife would have killed me. Now I'm not sure what to do. I really want the 19"s for the look, but the idea of RFTs of that low profile really concerns me from both a durability (I popped too many sidewalls last time) and ride perspective. Any feedback you can provide on experience with 19" RFTs (I'd be getting the Adjustable Suspension, so I guess that helps the ride) would be appreciated. Also, if on 19s, how many of you went with the Wheel & Tire coverage? The dealer is quoting me $1,999 for 3 years and $2,499 for 5, which sounds like a lot. I paid ~$1,300 for 4 years on my S4 based on my prior BMW RFT experience and never used it (non-RFTs on the S4) Lastly, I can't seem to find a 340 to drive in the NYC area (only 330s) and the dealer is telling be BMW put a temporary stop on production and they are waiting for allocations, which will be scarce. Anyone else have issues trying to find a 340 to demo or an allocation to order? Thanks |

Go with run flats as you will need the trunk space.
paid $700 for 3 year tire wheel coverage with no deductible. M340 selling like hot cakes as they basically made a whooper than can outperform a m3 for 25k less. |

Which summer runflats does BMW use for the m340i? The all season run flats I have on my 330i are the pirelli P7 cinturato's. I thought i wouldn't like them but they've really grown on me. Great steering response/comfortable ride and pretty good grip for all season tires. They seem way better than the old school bridgestone and continental run flats. I remember going over a pothole and thought the car was going to come apart. This could also be b/c of hte g20 suspension but i dont think so b/c its supposed to be stiffer than the F30/E90.

an A4 has a 13 cubic foot trunk. a 340i with runflats has 17. with the spare its probably about the same.
You can also just buy the non runflats, and buy the floor covering (like $200) and remove the spare and only put it in there, when you are going on a long trip or something. Its $150 for the spare + $200 for the trunk floor part, and given the runflats cost way more than non runflats you'll make that back on the first tire replacement. If you're leasing , the non runflats are cheaper to put on the tire for a lease return too, so its mostly works out there too. Plus you'll get to drive the car the way it was meant to be with non runflats |

The B9 A4/S4 definitely has a bigger trunk (rft or not). I'm positive that BMW is over rating the capacity of their trunk (or Audi is under rating) in any case the G20 trunk is smaller.

In the 7 years with run flats, I had one nail flat. Completely flatted beyond driving. The BMW roadside fixed it 3 days but it was at home. If I was traveling I don’t know what I have done. But for daily fun driving, its worth the risk. Last edited by Taranto300; 01-10-2020 at 06:23 PM.. |

I agree 100pc. I did read in a few magazines that the 330i apparently has a bigger trunk but I’m 100pc positive my A4 had a bigger trunk.

This is our standard and only option for Canadians when we select the non-runflat tire package 791M bicolour with Summer performance tires. We do not get spare in the trunk.

With the donut enclosure it is way smaller than my S4, and only practical for people who don’t really put anything sizable in the trunk. Obviously, BMW is offering this option because so many people have complained about the run flats, which is great, but the execution (packaging) is terrible. I can’t believe someone at BMW looked at the result and thought it was reasonable. |

Keep / get the donut.
For additional $150 it is well worth it. (I custom ordered my car with it) The entire thing is removable and you will have the same trunk space as a car with RFTs. The trunk floor is slightly different but you can order that part separately and have the perfect OEM look. My M340 had a nail in the tire it within 1st 700 miles. Eventhough I did not have to use the spare, it was a piece of mind. I can write down pages and pages of nightmare stories about being stuck on the side of the road with no spare tire. Those quick fix things are useless and will immediately destroy your tire if you use it. To me, it is an absolute no brainer to get the non run flats (heck we have been bitching about RFTs for the longest time and BMW listened and offering us options now) and get a car equipped with a spare. If you were to buy everything that comes with the spare tire package, it will cost you well over $150 and I love my regular tires! I will not leave my house on a road trip without a spare, period.

The carpeted floors are slightly different but may not bother some people. If it bothers you, you will have to get a new carpeted divider which is available from BMW.

I wish I got the spare tire option. I definitely want to ditch my run flats whenever their tread life is over but will need to look into options for fitting a spare in the back. For 150 bucks it was so dumb not to get it from factory.
Edit: may think of buying this: https://www.bimmerzone.com/bmw-3-ser...f0c1d0620bc891 That along with a jack and a cover/case to put it in the trunk...Why didn't I just get the spare tire kit :/ Last edited by pneumodoc; 01-13-2020 at 06:01 PM.. |
