Maybe, but adding more torque and power reaches a point of diminishing returns. AWD can get more power to the ground, and get net gains in acceleration to a point. Keep adding power though, and it requires super car levels of engineering and equipment, along with favorable weather and surface conditions to make the most of that power and net fractions of a second. Even then, in everyday living, the average driver won't consistently obtain the numbers that c&d, or whoever, was able to with a professional driver in favorable conditions, after many tries.

It was the best compromise for me at the time, I love it for the day to day and on the uk roads it's more than enough for 90% of the time, but i can tell it's no where near dynamic as an M3 would be. The price difference at the time was a push too far at the time of purchase with what I had going on, I have no problems saying that, any 340i owner that tells you that they wouldn't prefer an M3 is lying in my opinion, 340 is still a great car, but it's no M3 which is also reflected by the price and discounts offered. |

How about a real race with a stock F80 M3 vs a M340i.....someone local should do this... dig and roll. The M3 will beat the m340i for sure especially top end.

As others have pointed out....and I concur
it's about the driver's preference...and the trade offs they make for their own reasons... Many would prefer the m3 suspension for sure but many others would trade that down to m-performance suspension and have more power & torque, dollar for dollar. Note: I didn't say all people choose for this reason but many do. Bone stock F80 M3 Vs A tuned + upgraded turbo G20 M340xi |

Going new M4 now I think would be a mistake, it's looking dated to me now. For me the biggest let down has been the handling in the f30 340, the engine being the best point about the car. |

Pointless comparison.
There is no M performance model that can stack up with the full upgrades of an M car—-regardless of 0-60 times.

Coming from a 16 M4 full bolt on with meth, I can say my current 20 M340 is faster with just a downpipe, intake and tune. The current car handles well but no comparison to the M in the corners.
My buddy has an F80 (DCT) with bm3, downpipes, midpipe, m-performance exhaust and intake and our 3 runs he couldn't catch me to 140 with my m340. We did one dig which he roasted the tires and two 40 rolls. |

Proving my point. M340 xdrive is fast or as fast as pre gen m3/4 depending on what you read. Also given the performance of the new X3/4M. Would stand to reason that new M3/4 will be faster and with sharper handling than M340 and pre gen M3/4. Just a guess speed should be close to M5

Decisions Decisions Decisions
I need to switch from two to one car, I currently have e92 M3 manual and f31 diesel, I can't decide used f82 M3 Competition manual or g20 M340i, After reading endless reviews of both cars, still nowhere near the decision, nobody talks about g20's active steering, I remember e60's active steering was horrible, any comments about steering?

The F82 M3C is an all time great and will remain desirable for a long time - more so than the E90 did IMO. One of the best looking cars ever made. The G20 makes it feel very old, though as an ownership experience (which is fine but noteworthy). The chassis and the grip levels on the new car mean you can basically keep your foot in whatever the bend, in a way I probably wouldn’t have in the M. It’s very useable and very, very quick. But, it’s much more refined than the M and in non Sport mode, just feels like a comfortable cruiser. Think C43, rather than F30 340i. So in reality, can’t go wrong with either. Depends what you want from a car on a day to day basis. Drive both... I’d say going off the M340, the next M3 is going to be incredible, just a shame it’s be hideous looking. |

Both are great platforms (S55, B58). Can’t really go wrong with either. The M is a more visceral driving experience while the m340 is a more comfortable daily. Both are faster than anything legally applicable on the streets.
The torque of the b58 is impressive and coupled with minimal traction issues is extremely satisfying from a stoplight. The sound of the s55 is surprisingly better to me, maybe due to the cs exhaust, not sure. This is in compassion to a F30 340i with MPPSK, catless DPs, as well as my current X3M40i. The 340i setup has a ton of rasp, so I might have had a different opinion if I had gone with catted. I couldn’t decide so went with both, sort of (x3m40i). I would say that I look forward to taking the F80 on a drive vs the G01 when my wife asks which car we’re taking (to which she objects to). |

I will give my 2 cents on acceleration. Yes I love it. In a nutshell due to the way my M4 felt although much slower than the new body M5 I got after, I liked the M4 better. Sharper, more buttoned down, much more fun for me to drive anyway.
So does acceleration matter to me yea but acceleration and road feel/handling and acceleration trump straight acceleration for me
