Mission Performance Stage 2 Tune

Hey ya'll,

First real post on the g20/B58 forum after lurking for a while. Picked up my 2020 m340i in April of this year. Previously came from the Subaru world (WRX/STi) and always enjoyed modifying that platform, so I already had a plan for this car before buying it. After buying the car, I quickly messed around with JB4 and BMS Intake, and other than maybe bumping up the boost a few PSI, no real difference noted. Quickly took the piggy back off, and searched locally for a dyno tune. Found a local tuner who does big build/tunes for M3/M5's, and had him tune the car with a catless DP (and MPE exhaust). Long story short, had some CEL's pop up (non cat related, and tuner was backlogged with other builds.....so I reached out to Alex at MP.

After a few back and forth emails, we determined that most likely the DME was bench unlocked and we should have no problems flashing the MP Stage 2 tune. Alex was awesome to deal with, and also offered to sit on the phone with me and TeamViewer the flash to make sure we didn't lock the DME. Flash was quick and easy. I went with Stage 2 (catless DP), no extra burbles (sounded horrible with my previous tune), and removing cold start.

The tune is great. Can't compare to JB4 (because garbage): Power delivery is much more linear, top end is smooth and power keeps coming. Shifts seem more crisp up top, and power picks up right away (no hesitation). Of course NO CEL (yay!). Getting rid of the cold start is a great feature (neighbors thank me), and no more jerkiness when pulling away slowly in low RPM range. The HP/TQ values were changed to 560/560 which was nice. Overall the tune hits HARD, breaking loose my 255 Michelin Sport 4s through 1,2, and 3rd gear. Would recommend MP tune to anyone 100%!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the write up! It's nice that you are in a position to compare/contrast your experience across several tuning platforms all on the M340.

Alex and his company Mission Performance are truly world class.

I am a huge fan for many of the reasons you shared.

ps- love me a WRX/STi such a fun car

Miss my subies for sure, but the power and comfort of the m340i is classes above. Alex was great, and can’t wait to see what else he does with the B58 platform! This is how the car should be coming out of factory!

Quick question, what happens when BMW does and OTA do you lose your tune? Just wondering still weighing up tuning options

That’s a good question. I typically don’t do the updates that come
Through the iDrive and if I go in for the free oil change will also politely
decline any updates

Good question, I am curious as well. After my last non-OTA update (3/2020) I lost all of my apps and my climate control rules and the only way to fix this is to bring it in to do another update. Unfortunately I had a tune done after the 3/2020 update and if I bring my car in for another update they will lock the DME again. Alex said I would have to send it back to him to unlock it again so I am stuck without all the features I used to have.

Totally agree in fact that's how I often describe the flash when asked about it. It's like you checked an option box for more power - I think it's the best way to describe the oem like power delivery the MP platform delivers (and like you I have had the chance to compare it to a couple other offerings)

Any issues with the dealership when bringing in your car for service?

Haven’t had to deal with the stealership yet. Getting my oil changes won’t be an issue. I’ve been modifying cars long enough that I know “You pay to play”.

I know you weren't asking me - so apologies for jumping in but in that I've been through this I figured I'd share...

I've had MP tune on several BMWs now - presently my M340 and before this car my 340i (and others) - zippo issues with service. I typically just flash back to stock (not sure if that matters anymore) before going in and it's just business as usual. And while my money goes to Mission Performance the same holds true for other well designed responsible tunes I would anticipate no issues

While others experience may be different this is what to date I have experienced.

But you pay to play - the nice thing is the B58 engine with a well designed flash (or piggy) stage 1 or 2 - is showing nearly no (I know of none) issues :-) and this has been the case since it was brought to market

For general forum consumption:
As I’ve said many times before there is a reason with the pick on any tuner in the world and their reputation on line Toyota global chose Alex and his company (Mission Performance) to develop performance software for their very own TRD B58 equipped Supra which they showcased on the global stage. Google it if you want to read more

Yes yes I’m a MP fanboy but for good reason.

And the funny thing is Alex never even mentioned the aforementioned - he just quietly goes about his business...people eventually find him :-)

Interesting that you flash to stock....cause from what I know in the past a flash is a flash....meaning it can be found regardless, so if no CEL and no issues there would be no reason for dealer to go looking regardless if actively tuned or “not”. Just my 0.02

I think the best way to determine if you are before or after the cutoff point is to give Alex a call.

He'll send you a link to download his software and then via obd it'll send his server a data dump and he'll let you know what your options are.

It's free and at least you'll know what you are up against

Hope this helps

no it just means you need to send your dme in to have it unlocked / the tunes are all built it's just getting the computer unlocked to allow for a flash is what presents the challenge on the later cars

ps- i posted a little DIY on dme removal - it is right under the hood and maybe a 5 minute job with no tools :-) super easy
