Newest info updates: G80 M3 Pure, Base and Competition models (Updated May 20, 2019)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
May 2019 Update:

I am withdrawing most of my forecasting on G8x M3/M4. It appears the lineup has been significantly reshuffled, with at least one version cancelled for production. Furthermore, I can't figure out the new situation well enough to describe it in detail. Therefore, I can no longer guarantee neither RWD nor manual models. All I know is that there will be M3/M4 and M3/M4 Competition, and that there will be more separation between regular and Competition models than before. Everything else is a mystery to me now. BMW, you win a point here.

January 2019 Update:
  • Build details for G80 M3
    • Starts production in 2020 (more likely later in the year).
    • Three performance levels: 444hp (Pure), 475hp ("base"), and 500hp (Competition).
    • Some versions will have RWD, others xDrive; both manual and automatic transmissions will be available. The reports that it will be Pure+manual+RWD, base+auto+xDrive, and Competition+auto+xDrive seem plausible but I don't yet want to claim that no other combos will be available.
    • Pure and base will have 18" front and 19" rear wheels; Competition will have 19"/20" as standard (optional on the other models).
    • Standard equipment for all models will include M diff, adaptive suspension, M seats, Live dashboard.
    • Optional equipment will be pretty much the same as the regular G20, with the notable additions of carbon ceramic brakes (available on all versions), carbon bucket seats (likely not in the U.S.) and of course Merino leather, including full leather interiors.

Thank you for the update!

I hope we can get 6MT in the base model but if it's only available in pure then so be it!

Edit: Hopefully we can spec the pure model like the base model, as I want a fully loaded car with 6MT.

Do you think that the Pure model is going to be a lightweight version? Otherwise I don't understand why they'd have a model thats more "basic" than the base version.

As an aside - I hate that MB & BMW are now having these higher-end versions of the AMG & M cars that have more performance than standard AMG/M cars. It used to be that getting an M3 meant you were getting the best performance car BMW could make on the 3-series platform. Now it feels to me that M3 is being artificially restrained so that they can demand more money for the real best performance car they can make: the M3 Competition or whatever they call it. If they follow MB (and they will - BMW has shown that they will copy literally everyone this past decade) then the price difference between the M3 and the "actually this is really the M3" will be +$8k.

That all sounds great. I fear that we'll see a substantial price increase this time around, upwards of 20%, what with all of the new features added to the car.

BMW has been straight up copying Mercedes product strategy, so look to their pricing to get a good idea of what the M3 will cost.

I'll take a pure. Let's see what the MSRP is.. Only "convenience features" I really want is rear view camera and premium audio.

I just hope the thing isn't 80k ... :

The sedan is always first from BMW. The coupe is always second.

The 4 series is only 3/4 thru it's lifecycle. Why would they replace it now?
M4 cabrio (F83) EOP is October 2020, as the late 2020 SOP for the G80 lines up with this. F82 EOP is July 2020.

Pretty sure the last gen M3/M4 came out together

this will be interesting if it comes out in 2020, only 1 year after X3M/X4M, you would think they would want to capitalize on 2 years of sales on those first, there will be some cross shopping.

Thanks for the info.
How do they get from 444hp to 500 hp. Electric motors? Water injection?
Cannot imagine water injection on a daily (how do you refill in the trunk without emptying it first during a trip?) but additional electric motors would make sense...

Maybe.

The F8x M3 and M4 coupe arrived at the same time. In the two prior generations where an M3 sedan was available, it arrived after the coupe did (the E90 M3 was a few months behind the E92 M3, while the E36 M3 sedan came years after the E36 M3 coupe). So, from a historic perspective the M3 sedan coming first would be unprecedented.

The F32 4 Series coupe will end production by mid next year. The G22 4 Series coupe will begin production immediately after. Since, as the OP states, the G80 M3 is currently tracking for late next year, it is still theoretically possible that it and the G82 M4 will launch at the same time or nearly the same time. It would mean a quick turnaround from the G22 4 Series to the G82 M4, but that is not unlikely given that the F82 followed the F32 by just a few months, and the gap could easily close even more this generation.

My F80 was lightly equipped. Stock 18" and 6-speed. With G80 I'll go with the least expensive all wheel drive available with ZMT.

From a business model perspective, BMW AG and NA will offer all of the creature comforts for the pure G80. The options when ordered is pure profit as the underling infrastructure to add the option is already "baked" into the stripper vehicle. Unlike the CS and GTS variants which command a premium price for a bare bones low weight offering.
