Does the G20 have a Li-ion or AGM battery?

Hi everyone.

Can anyone confirm if the battery in a 2019 330i msport is lithium or agm.

My dealer has said lithium. Now they say agm.

My bmw trickle charger has an option for switching from agm to lithium.

Want to make sure I have the correct settings.

Thanks

It has both. There is a small lithium-ion battery under the hood and a larger AGM battery in the trunk. I'm not exactly sure what it's for, but I think the li-ion battery is to allow for faster charging and discharging when needed while the AGM is for starting the car and steady standby power.

If I had to guess...

The Lithium battery powers Engine Start - Stop as it can deliver steady power a lot more reliably and charge quickly. And for that moment when the car has to turn back on and you have voltage drops this battery would be keeping electronics on steady voltage (electronics HATE spikes and dips).

The AGM battery would be powering everything else...

But I'm not an automotive engineer so there may be a bit off in my assumption...

Thank you. Well that’s interesting. Now my dealer says it only has a agm.

Shouldn’t they know this stuff. 😳

Definitely AGM, but there may be a secondary LI bat.

I searched but couldn't find any thread regarding the battery location. BMW batteries are traditionally inside the trunk, but the G20 is not like the F30 where it hides on the right hand side corner. Does anyone knows where is it located?

Correct. https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...92&postcount=9

There is also a small battery under the hood near the firewall.

48V Battery in M340 Engine Bay?

My friend leased an M340i xDrive and I noticed in his engine bay (circled in the photo), other than the battery in the trunk, there is an additional battery supplied by LG Chem. Is this BMW's introduction into the 48V low-amperage electrical system? If so, does anyone know what it would power/assist?

That's what I guess too, I miss the lower storage compartment in the F30, it seems no easy access to the battery, does it require screw to open?

It is no easy access to it, you have to remove all the items in the trunk and find a way to lift up the cover. I believe it gives you better weight balance in the lower middle location than it was on the right hand corner.

Thanks for the picture illustration!

My M340i xDrive (Sept 2019 build) does not have the under-hood lithium battery that you've circled. There is just an empty space there. The battery in the boot/trunk is an AGM battery. I'm mystified - does anyone know more?

The LG li-on battery must be for the engine start and stop. I unplugged the battery and the car still starts up with no check engine light. I did not try the engine start-stop though.

The additional 12 V lithium ion starter / auxiliary battery is to power vehicles that opted for the flux capacitor

J/k, it's an additional battery that's fitted to vehicles with added options, that BMW determines might need it.

Was curios so I checked mine and I do have that second battery under the hood.

Sept 2019 build M340xi with the following options:

Premium pkg
Executive pkg
Driver's assistance pkg
Driver's assistance pro pkg
Remote Start
Harmon Kardon
Wireless charging

Now if someone has a similar build and doesn't have it the mystery just deepens lol
