In 2013 I purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This was a face-lift to the previous year but had substantial upgrades, new front end, interior parts, 8 speed tranny (previous was a 5 speed), etc.
Though i had a few instances that required trips to the dealer, it was all done under warranty and the car was solid after the first year or so. I feel like the G80 may be that way as well. If there are issues, take it to the dealer to fix, they'll give you a decent loaner and you should be set.

As long as I like what the G80 looks like in person, and it drives & performs as expected, I think I'll go for an early completion model. I'm not really worried about always having the latest & greatest tech & features so I won't be itching to upgrade 2 years later if BMW improve their iDrive or something like that. |

Upgraded lights, CarPlay, new iDrive (which is fabulous) plus all the F80 normal features will be a great first year release of a new gen. |

Buying first year
I have had 4 first year M3s/4s starting with my 2001 E46 M3 Coupe. In fact, I usually get one of the first delivered in my state. I keep them a full model cycle, and like the fact that they are "new" longer. There have been issues, but always well-handled by BMW/dealer, even after warranty. Given the current economic situation, and the fact I'll be 72 next month, not sure if I'll get one of the first of the upcoming generation (manual, please). But, it's a goal - start the spousal negotiation!

Never had a problem buying first year run cars on the contrary my 392 Widebody with the 6.4L that's been out for 5 years blew a piston at 3k miles on the car (still in dealership) BMW has some of the best modern manufacturing i wouldn't hesitate buying an M car just released

So far it seems those of us with S58 X3Ms haven't had any drivetrain related issues. Some minor cosmetic and fit/finish issues but nothing terribly egregious. There must be S58 owners over 10k miles by now.

Same, I have an early build G20 without any issues and car now has over 10k miles. The G80 is in my sights as a possible replacement when my lease ends. Well, if I can stomach the new grill, can't wait to see what the M3 will look like.

If things are right for you it should be a go. As with BMW you know the LCI is going to be equipped with nicer headlights and taillights, cs, gts, etc. Being the first ones to play is awesome though.
