April 2020 C&D M340i Review

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/

HIGHS: Turbocharged inline-six is never caught sleeping, transmission tuning is sporty when you want it to be and invisible when you want to cruise, traction and launch-control acceleration will dry-gulch you.

LOWS: Ride is arthritic in any setting, steering remains numb, passengers might not want to ride with you.

I can't believe they think the ride is harsh in comfort. This isn't a luxury cruiser. It is VERY compliant in comfort (my wife hates firm riding cars and she was extremely surprised by the ride when she took it for a spin). I would admit that it gets firm in sport+ or if you have the fixed suspension, but even then it's not what I would consider a low point especially for a sports sedan...maybe compared to a Camry.

C&D isn't the most consistent, and their multiple reviews of the same car vary based on who's writing the review (although I guess to some extent you could say that about any publication).

The prior review this editor wrote up was for an Audi S7... so maybe a case of cognitive bias?

Interestingly, this SAME reviewer said in a previous review:

"On the street, the adaptive dampers provide a smooth ride over the open road yet can firm up nicely when the pavement begins to twist into the shape of a rattlesnake."

I will say i have the fixed suspension and have zero complaints. However, one day I took a coworker out for lunch and he remarked that the car was stiff. I don't consider it stiff at all. In-fact, I find the car sometimes too comfortable if i am being honest and wished that BMW had injected a little more of the M3's character into it. So, to each their own, we don't all like the same things.

ps. passengers not wanting to ride is a plus.

It's crazy though that the one they're reviewing has the adaptive suspension and they think it's too stiff in comfort lol. I do like the adaptive and wouldn't have ordered it any other way, but if my adaptive (when it's set to Sport) feels the way your fixed susp does, it's totally livable and maybe even desirable for some like yourself...it's like the RWD vs xDrive preference.

Every car has its Pros and Cons, but if you are looking for a sport sedan, it's difficult to find a more balanced and well rounded car at this price point.

What. ? Nobody noticed 3.5 seconds to 60?

I think they are smoking something.

Well their logic is, since they were able to achieve 3.8s with the RWD model, and since BMW claims the AWD model is 0.3s quicker than the RWD model, they simply shaved that amount off the 3.8s time. So it's effectively an estimated 0-60 time.

There's members here running sub 4 second 0 to 60 already (stock). 3.5 would have to be the perfect conditions, but it's definitely realistic.

Exactly. Plus they use the 1 ft roll out in their times

My M340 is one of best cars I have owned. My critique would be sport plus is not stiff enough and more power! Very smooth ride, doing 80+ on highway is easy if you don't pay attention

Lol I got pulled over last night going 84 in a 55... I honestly didn't realize I was going that fast! She (state highway) also tested my window tint and found out it's 23% visibility which was also illegal.

Luckily she gave me a warning on everything but wow is it easy to fly in this car and not even realize it!

To be fair, they said it may be due to the car's winter tires which is all they had to test with.

If anything winter tires make it more soft, not more firm.

Everyone will complain about the stiff suspension, but if it was soft and floaty like the pre-lci f30 they would be saying that bmw has lost its way and the 3 series is no longer a sports sedan, or sporty sedan, or whatever.

If they were runflats, that might have been what they meant. Anyone who enjoys having fun would have non runflats.

They meant winter tires for sure...from the article:

We should, however, note that our test car came shod with winter rubber, and we didn't swap into summer rubber like we would have done for proper testing. On relatively low-grip winter tires, it becomes obvious that the xDrive system favors the rear.

I meant maybe they were winter runflats instead of the Pilot Sport 4S tires. Many people who are OK with driving on go-flats in the summer prefer not to rely on just a fix-a-flat in the winter and go with runflat winter tires.
