What's the purpose of eSIM?

I bought my M340i off the lot so it came with a few options that I didn't intend to order but now I have them. One is the eSIM. What is this for? It seems that the car already has connectivity for maps, the app, even Spotify as part of the 3 years of free ConnectedApps that come with it. Why would I activate the eSIM and pay my own cell service provider for it? Is this just for people who want their car to have Wifi so kids with tablets, etc. can use the internet without connecting to a hotspot on a cellphone? Trying to figure out if I have any use for this option or if it's just on the car but I won't use it.

Basically just a glorified hot spot. Like you said, for kids to connect their devices to.
