Replace M340i with M340D?
Hi all. I was the proud owner of a MY21 M340i for the grand total of 3 weeks before it got stolen off my driveway in broad daylight last Thursday. Less than ideal but luckily we weren't in and they found the keys without causing too much devastation.
So thinking long and hard about what to replace it with i'm increasingly thinking of a 340D, nearly as quick and I'm guessing (hoping) not seen as quite as desirable to the criminal fraternity? As an aside if anyone spots LK21 XDW let me or the police know!! |

Sorry to hear that, can’t own anything nice these days!
I highly doubt the D is any less desirable! It’s basically the same car and on most roads it’s basically just as quick. I had a test drive of it as the dealer didn’t have an I at the time and I was really impressed with it, I’d be happy to switch but I would miss the engine note and the petrol feels slightly more agile. 60mpg on a run should mean it’s less in fuel though! I’m always worried on residuals with the diesels, think they will be first to go compared to the petrol but I could be wrong |

The diesel is great! I couldn't say if thieves find it as attractive, but it's 99% the same as the petrol. The wallop of torque it has is amazing. It obviously isn't as high revving or sweet sounding but that overtaking ability is phenomenal. Plus there is the augmented sound played in when pressing on and honestly it sounds pretty good. You wouldn't think it's a diesel.
I'm totally happy with mine, it's fast, it's comfortable and, compared with the petrol, it's frugal too!

All depends on your usage, if you do lots of sub 20 mile trips, get a petrol or you will have DPF issues ( speaking from experience here ) down the line |

I have the M340d and love it! For me personally it ticks all the boxes, I deliberately went out of my way NOT to buy the M340i.
If you do get one you won’t be disappointed. |

i can't understand how it's almost as fast as the m340i when it's what nearly 40kw down on power and nearly 100kh heavier
if we had the D in the local market i would have had a nightmare trying to decide which one to buy lol |

My tuppence....
It depends how you are going to pay for it. The green lobby, while hitting all ICE vehicles has a particular dislike for diesel. That this 340d is very advanced on that side of things, is irrelevant. If you lease it, then you can hand it back if things turn bad. I drove DERV for 25 years and love the torque. But I don't do the mileage I once did. A fair number of shorter journeys which wouldn't get a diesel up to temp. I am trying to get the Mrs to chop her car for an EV, but tbh I should prob chop my M340i for one. |

if only there was an EV that's actually good that doesn't cost and weigh as much as the iX that gets me where i need to go
where i live i need to travel quite a distance through remote middle-of-nowhere mountains and it's always bad weather and wintry conditions, and no chargers in between |

Electric still feels like a false economy atm, I think they say it takes 6 years to break even compared to ICE, and most don't keep that long |

Sold my M340i last month and got another last week.
When looking at either a 330D, 320D, 340D or 340i I found the price asked for the 340i much closer to the purchase price. For example if you bought a M340D for £44K on sites like WBC or Motorway they would offer £37K. If you bought a M340i for £41K it they offered £39750 I don't know why or if they correct but after selling my M340i which I owned for 12 months and lost £300 I got another and the re sale seems much better than Diesel cars. Also if you do around 12K miles a year the difference in fuel is about £400 between the I and D Get another M340I and take the badge off...Would look the same as any other M340X then |

Thanks all for responses. I'd be buying it's replacement outright so residuals comments help thanks.
I paid £43995 for it, 21 plate, 9k miles and had Technology pack. Didn't go for GAP, hoping/praying insurance come up with something very near to that. |

Sorry to hear about the theft. Had similar twice, not good.
Have you thought about a 330d xdrive - debadged looks like a 320d. I had wanted to get a M340i but couldn't as only had 14days to find one following write off. On the go very brisk; in reality just a quick as M140i which it replaced on fun roads (not as fun I should add as 85,000miles on m140 always put a smile on my face, the noise and edginess was always good). |

M340d MHT is a great, effortless drive with that mountain of torque, and silly quick, albeit it doesn't 'sing' quite like the 340i. Does unbelievable mpg and don't worry about dpf issues, so long as you give them a good "Italian tune up" now and again you will have no issues. As you can see below I've driven 6 pot beemers with boat motors for may years and never had a problem.

The M340i does what; 34mpg if lucky? The M340D is 60mpg or 44mpg in mine around town and shorter runs. The price in fuel isn’t miles apart either, I’d still buy a diesel now over any petrol regardless of manufacturer. Residuals may differ however, so not sure if people factor this in when doing these cost comparisons. Just mentioning as curious. Also my Mrs said the worst thing she ever did was get out of her diesel into a petrol, she’s waiting now to chop it in and going back to diesel. |

if you drive fast over 60mph the extra horses of the i will pull harder. Under 60 the torque of the D must be so addictive Last edited by G30M; 05-22-2022 at 06:03 PM.. |

The residuals don't look good for diesel at present. I looked around at loads of cars can the M340i came out on top for residuals Take this 330D currently on BMW AUC Currently you could sale it for a loss. Looked at loads of M340D and M340I and the I is holding much stronger on motorway, eBay and WBC |

I'm very much hoping these strong residuals mean the insurance company won't bend me over with their valuation......
I'm really tempted by a Q8. Very different but I test drove one a while ago when the wife was looking to change hers and I absolutely loved it, felt like an overgrown hot hatch and the engine (diesel) actually sounded great. Wife hated it though and bought a Disco instead. Last edited by PXZ3479; 05-23-2022 at 02:08 AM.. Reason: Added |
