Morning.. Got answer from the dealer friday and BMW doesn't acknowledge it as a defect as of yet. But, the dealer is still working on it in collaboration with BMW.

As I suspected. They probably know what the problem is but don't want to pay for it. This will probably end as a recall but it can take years...

Perhaps BMW have not identified any particular issue yet. Even reading through this topic with the experiments and comments, it is still not evident if it is a mechanical component at fault, a specific specification, how the car is assembled, or simply a generated sound due to motion and speed. Is it airborne to the cabin, or a structural transmission? Can it be heard outside the car, via an open window, for example?

I still wonder at the scale of this noise problem. We are getting more tourings on the road as time moves forward, I wonder if we will see more users contributing to the topic, or more threads on the subject.

Joe's UK review on the M430i touring gets nothing but praise, for how quiet it is.

I truly don't think BMW have identified the issue.

I've been wondering if it is suspension specific, as well as being M-sport with 19" wheels.

Checking out the parts for the G20, both passive and active suspension, have 'frequency' dampers fitted to the front struts, so not so sure if there would be a difference. I imagine the G21 will be the same, but haven't yet found a parts diagram for the touring.

Is it the sound that is like a steady low frequency fan on low speed?
It sounds like wind rushing trough something larger, so it's frequency is low, like if you pursed your lips like you were going to whistle but keep your lips wider/farther apart and blow while making "short u" sound, like in the word for the "Yew" tree.

As you were moving the mic around that sound seemed loudest when the mic was around the area where that rubber boot/coupler is.

If that is the sound, it doesn't sound like a bearing to me.
It sounds like air rushing through a tube.
At least that is the what it sounds like, but it could be generated by something else.

Does anyone have a diagram of the engine bay and related parts?

This sound is similar but is not the culprit, because I can hear it when the car rolls with the engine off.

I have the same sound on my M340i xDrive. I just swapped to non run-flat tires and the noise is still present. Very strange.

And this issue is thought to be a touring, (wagon) only.

Makes it more of a head scratcher, if it does include the G20 saloon (sedan).

Yesterday our BMW workshop sent more sound recordings to the German engineers and they are waiting for a respons. So things are still rolling.

I think that it's good news if it also appears on some sedans, because then it's for sure a mechanical issue. I have driven sedans with same specs as mine and they have all been dead quiet.

I actually just got back from having my right front tire replaced. The noise is still present, unfortunately. I hope BMW will resolve this issue quickly. I only have 200 miles on the odometer and I loath driving the damn car.

Interesting. It might be a 2020 model thing then and not a Touring thing only.

Haha! No problem. The information flow from the dealer is pretty much not existing. Updates have to be dragged out of them. Pretty annoying.

When driving in -3 celsius the noise was heavily reduced, almost silent.

Strange!

Anyone else noticed a difference?

It feels like a resonance that's being amplified by the cabin structure. Is it illegal to wear noise cancelling headphones while driving? JK.
