2020 vs. 2021 M340

Hi everyone, sorry if this has been answered somewhere, read the 2021 update thread and wanted to double check a couple things before I end up shopping around soon.

Are the only difference vs. 2020 the color changes, standard auto high beams, and Android Auto (maybe other minor stuff). And did anybody verify getting AA on their 2020 with an OTA update? Did anything else really change that would justify possibly paying more for a 2021 at the moment?

Still need to see M440 in person, but I don't have great expectations and certainly don't want to spend a bunch of money for something "to grow on me".

TIA

If you have the opportunity to pick up a 2020 for a good amount less than a 2021 just do it. Not enough changed to justify it. They added the 48v mild hybrid but you also lose the auto start/stop button (sucks). You can get AA on a 2020 it just has to have the 07.2020 software...which is either going to come with the 2020 already from the dealer or you can upgrade later at the dealer or OTA.

For RWD made in Mexico vs made in Germany. Does this really matter? I don't think so. But it is a difference that you can add to your list :-)

Outside of the stuff mentioned, the incentives for the 2020s are better at the moment. So you could come out ahead if you go that route and won't sacrifice much in terms of features.

Definitely a bummer that 2021 loses the ASS button, but I plan on driving my car in Sport mode 90%+ of the time, so it's a moot point. ASS is off in Sport mode, which is nice.

Hi John.K
I'm going off memory here (so perhaps someone will jump in and correct me) but if I'm not mistaken....all G20's for the US market, with the exception of the M340 Xdrive, are being produced in Mexico

Another difference is the ecu has new built in protections that will prevent any tuning. Ecutek wrote a long post describing that even direct connection to the processor of the ecu will not allow them access to the system. So bench loading or any tuning currently will not be available, they said they will continue to work on the problem but they also said they are going to look at other platforms to continue tuning. So make sure you are happy with the power level of the car stock as tuning solutions won't be around for a while. Unless you use a JB4 or piggyback type device.

Mission performance has been able to crack it but you'll have to send them your ecu if you're not in the Los Angeles area.

Not the post 7/2020 build or at least that's way ecutek claims, maybe mission can chime in but BMW is using a new dme and it can't be unlocked even via sending it in.

I saw this post from the Supra forum. I think some of the earlier b58 will increase in price.

When competitors try to say they can unlock an A91 ECU but the Senior Calibrator at EcuTek says different. 🤥

" Paul Blamire:
EcuTek Announcement:
Locked Bosch Bootloaders

As you may have seen some news, I would like to clarify the issues present on newly manufactured Bosch MEVD and MG1 ECUs.

We've been aware of a situation brewing in Bosch ECUs initially identified on BMW platforms but potentially affects all Bosch Tricore platforms that are currently being manufactured. We were unsure of the extent of these changes and how it would impact our business and yours, but we are starting to see affected ECUs out in the wild now.
Bosch have updated the security on their most recently manufactured ECUs that means that "bench unlocking" is no longer possible. This issue has been seen on MEVD17 ecus in BMW M4s manufactured in July 2020, and in MG1S024 ECUs in B48/B58 cars manufactured late June, July and August 2020. The exact data of the switchover is unknown but the earliest date we have currently is 25th June.

The result means for newly manufactured cars:
No OBD unlock
No Bench unlock
No bootpin unlock (that's right even opening the ECU to get direct access to the processor does not help)
Not just BMW will be affected, expect to see this coming to the likes of Mercedes etc.
There are no tuning products in existence that can support these new ECUs, it's an industry wide problem, not just an Ecutek problem.
The latest cars will NOT tuneable using an ECU reflash from any company, with any tool.
Older cars are unaffected and will continue to be tuneable

The changes are to the lowest level Bosch code, pre-programmed by Bosch at point of manufacturer (it is not an update to the BMW or manufacturer specific bootloader). So this is not something that can be easily recognised by the ID of the BMW software version, Calibration ID or bootloader version, our best guess is that it affects cars from June 2020 onwards. Our current information is that this new Bosch bootloader is not field upgradeable, so that means that existing ECUs with the older Bosch bootloader cannot be updated to the locked version with something like a dealer reflash (this is good!)

Our long term approach is we're looking for ways to allow programming of these ECUs, but it's a significant challenge which we don't quite know the scale of yet. We are working very hard to find a solution to this and nothing is being ruled out as a potential fix.

In the short term we intend to add the manufacturing date fields to our query tools to try and allow tuners to know with greater certainty what they are dealing with. Our plans for tuning products are already changing as a result of this development, and you may see our focus change subtly to support more existing vehicles on other platforms. We will continue to increase the breadth and depth of our tools and features to really push what is possible in the OEM ECU marketplace.

I realise this is not what you want to hear, but this is the reality at the moment. I would urge tuners across all marques, using all software tools to plan ahead when it comes to their customers and treat them fairly and with respect. None of us expected this to happen and we are all affected in one way or another. Be wary of anyone that claims to have a solution to this problem, until it's independently verified you should assume it's still an issue. When a company does have a solution, this is good news for everyone, as we will know it's not impossible to solve."

Not ALL.
Any non-standard color (DG, Tanz) is still made in Germany.

However, that should not matter. The build quality and parts are the same...

Are you sure the Auto Start Stop button is gone?? I still see this button in 2021 330i model, so is this something gone in 2021 340i?

Yes, it's gone in the M340i.

It's very smooth you won't really notice it, it's very very subtle. Passengers won't notice it at all

This is correct...and holds true for all B58/S58 equipped cars regardless of production date.

Out of curiosity I mentioned the issue raised in this thread to Alex when I had him on the phone a couple days back and he said it should be a non-issue for him and his platform. That said he does have a 2021 vehicle on its' way to his shop.

MissionPerformance in case you care to share more detail or I spoke out of turn

So good news :-)

Not speaking for him but see my post above for what was shared with me when I had MP/Alex on the phone the other day :-)

Xdrives for the NA market are made in Mexico, at least my '21 was. Individual color will come from Germany.
