'Detuned' from the factory!? True or False

A dealer told me the M440i (and other M’s) are ‘detuned’ from the factory until the have 310 miles on the odometer! Any truth at all to this???

I’m not sure if “detuned” is the proper term but I have heard of some Seadoo jetskis running modestly until reaching about 10 hours or the initial break in period. So I wouldn’t be surprised if auto manufactures did the same thing. Just go test drive a used one! Lol.

when I brought my car into the service dept at 250 miles for some door cup guards and edge guards they packaged in with my purchase the Service Advisor said "wait until it gets to over 1000 miles and itll be even faster". i havent pushed the car during break in, a couple of spirited pulls but no WOT and no near redline, so i wont even know if its different but it was an interesting comment implying a detuning

Yes. Cars DO get faster as they break in. But I would like to know specifically if BMW
Actually detunes them - not just recommends not getting on it.

It’s complete BS. Most people at the dealer have no clue what they are talking about.

They are not de-tuned............ they simply loosen up over time. Just some tw*t trying to keep a new owner happy. Breaking them in correctly does make a big difference to the engine / transmission over time. Running them too hard (or indeed too slow) when the internal components are bedding in can cause excessive wear early in the engines life which may well cause inefficiencies / breakdowns later. Lots of folks don't really care of course because they won't have the car that long. BTW If your dealer says it was run in "on the bench" before you got it...... they're talking rubbish, pure an simple.

I don't know if the cars are detuned; there is no official info about it.

But I agree 100% with your statement. Most advisors have no clue what they are talking about, and what they say does not represent BMW or even their dealerships.

Less than 300 miles on my '24 M440i and I've had it to the limiter already. 155MPH. That said I know BMW recommends being easy on it for the first 1k or so, but I've always broke my engines in the way I'm going to drive them. If it's going to break I want it to do it well before any warranty expires. To this day I've never had a problem with engine components breaking. But this is purely anecdotal.

I agree. But I am not a new owner. Still trying to decide on the right car.

And it just retunes itself after 360 miles?

I agree it’s BS. But he was trying to say “limited” like the M cars are until 1000 miles. I have confirmed it’s all BS.
