DIY: Dual/single active USB-C retrofit - iDrive 8

BMW removed the active USB-C interface from 07/2022 production and leaved the USB-C interface just to be a charing port. The "USB 2" in the HU is already coded and active, so the only parts thats necessary is the HSD-cable and an active USB-C port (single or dual). The retrofit is simply plug and play.

I went for dual as I want to connect a "MMI" box for streaming to be connected all time.

Needed part numbers:
84 10 8711939 (active single USB port)
84 10 5A57B32 (active dual USB port)
61 11 5A11C46 (HSD cable from HU to USB)

Cost:
≈ $120

Note: The active dual USB port does only have white background lighting. I recommend the single USB port which has amber lighting if the port is visible to match the other amber lights in the cabin.

The OEM USB-C port:

Start removing this cover. Just pull ut backwards with a plastic tool:

Remove cup holder:
Lift up the rubber inlay in the cup holder to get access to the two screws. Unscrew and lift up the cup holder. Disconnect the wires for USB-A and cigarette lighter 12v port.

Remove the wireless charger:
You will not have access to the wireless charger. Pull it up from its holder and disconnect the connector.

Remove center console trim around the gear selector/iDrive-controller. The trim has a shitty clip thats difficult to get access into. Unscrew the gear selector and lift it up too. I used instructions from this post: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1705095

Remove the switch centre on the dashboard. It can be removed by a plastic tool (use a wide tool to protect the dashboard) . Be careful for putting dents/marks in leather if you have leather dashboard. As I did the air vent background lighting retrofit as well and the upper dashboard already was removed, I could just put my hand on the backside and pull it out.

Release the HU by the screws hidden behind the switch centre:

Route the new HSD-cable:
The center console has already mounts ready for the cable. Route it in the original way back to the HU. Start from the USB-C side.

Connect to HU:
You'll have access to the HU from behind when its pulled down. The blue fakra is for the "USB 2" and its empty. Connect the new HSD into this.

Testing the dual port to see what happens:

Both mine and my friends iPhone shows up in the CID and it fully works.

Rebuild the car and enjoy your new (dual or single) active USB-C port.

Ok, I am very impressed and I was mad that I couldn't plug my SSD with FLAC files in my center console...this has me very intrigued but I don't know if I trust myself to do this quite yet

It's sad that BMW removes useful features to (I assume) save very little in production cost. The data-capable (and hidden) USB-C port, driver storage compartment and 12V outlet in the trunk are things I use and wouldn't want to loose.

Yes, it's annoying that BMW saves some few bucks on things like this. Luckily, its pretty easy and cheap to retrofit.

I wonder if iD8.5 headunit in MY25s also has USB2 left unplugged. Also, where did you get the wiring HSD? I can't seem to find one that would be for sale online.

It was ordered at my local BMW supplier. The part number is listed above.

It seems like the MGU22 has the empty USB2 as well.

Oh perfect! I'm hoping a generic right-angle fakra HSD to HSD fakra cable will suffice.

Yes, thats right! Both phones will be available if they are connected to the USB (at least with iDrive 8 as my car has).
