Whats the situation when taking the car in for a service , do you remove it , then re-install, and can this be detected once removed ?

When still within warranty, yes I'd remove it just to be on the safe side. I had a box on my previous F15 X5 30d and for its final service I removed the box and used the blanking plug, but left the wiring loom attached.

These piggy back boxes don't affect the programming of the ECU, so they are truly non-permanent. However, I don't think anything is fully undetectable. There are sensors all over the car that read things like engine torque etc so I'd go in with my eyes open.

Yeah, i was thinking that they may still see some kind of trace of witchcraft, I have a G05 30d atm, did you notice much of a difference in performance and economy while you had it installed.

These cars are pretty quick as standard, with plenty of low down torque, but there is a noticeable bump in performance, especially in the upper rev ranges. I probably noticed it more when I took the box back off actually as you get used to the extra power.

Economy was pretty much the same. Don't believe any of the claims of increased economy, the onboard computer thinks you're using less fuel than you are (since the sensor readings are being manipulated by the tuning module) so any apparent increase through OBD is artificial. Just going on a simple miles per tank basis, I didn't see any impact from using the box. Driving style is a bigger factor.
