Repaint or touch up?

Driving back from San Antonio to Houston and my BSM M340 was slammed with a rather large rock. Damage left mostly on the hood and consists of 3-4 small rock chips that penetrated the coating. Unfortunately don't have pics to share of the damage (vehicle is at dealer). I do have photos of the Rock.

Question is ... I'm debating whether to repaint the entire hood or just have the dealer do a touch up. If I repaint the good I'll definitely put on paint protection film this time. Thoughts?

Any idea what it might cost to repaint the entire hood? My service adviser said a couple hundred but he wasn't sure. That seems low to me.

I would imagine the cost would be $500 or more. Check out www.drcolorchip.com.

That's a rather large rock. PPF probably would have helped but a rock that size at speed would penetrate PPF and if it hit metal would probably leave an impression.

Regarding those touch up kits. I got one to touch up the side skirt and while it helped it is in no way as good as I was hoping.

We suffer from desire for perfection. I'd take it to a professional and see what they can do. You may not have to repaint the whole hood and they can sometime work miracles. Pictures would help. Good luck. We all feel your pain.

Got the estimate $1275 to repaint the entire hood. I've got a 15% coupon. So $1083 ( includes 6.25% tax ) Seem reasonable?

Never had a hood estimate but since i paid $250 for dent removal I would say that's probably reasonable. Interested to see a picture.

Here's some pictures. There are 4 areas/spots where damage went through the paint. Sorry for the reflections.

Touch it up in my opinion. Doesn't look bad.

Yea- I'd find someone that can do professional touch up. Seems excessive to repaint the entire hood. To each their own though. Sorry you're having to deal with this. It's annoying as all heck. Oh and i hope those bikes never fall.

You may also run into paint match issues with the fenders and bumper if you paint the entire hood without blending the fenders. That may end up being more noticeable than "touched up" paint chips.

Thx. Was told they'd blend it. But why wouldn't the paint match?

That's good then. I would still have them touched up but it's really how much it will bother you and what that's worth to you.

I agree with the others. I used dr. Colorchip on my A4 B9 and I was happy. The pits where the paint was filled in was noticeable to me since all I was looking at was covering the exposed metal. But it covered the ugliness up a lot (I had around 10 rock chips on my hood and bumper which I filled up using dr. colorchip). The lady who came to inspect my car on lease return said the car looked brand new. She didn’t notice the rock chips at all.
Repainting the hood seems excessive to me. Also, unless your car has PPF on it, rock chips are inevitable. Especially if you drive a lot on the highway.

A full respray of the hood is about $1200/1400 which will return it to original state.
Touch up by a professional will make it less noticeable but not perfect.
If you can tolerate 'not perfect", and anticipate more long haul travel with potentially more chips then it probably makes more sense to do a touch up?
