G20 330i Oil Change Reset Instructions

Hi, I have yet to see any oil change reset tutorials or forums so I would like to start this one:

G20 BMW Oil Change Reset Instructions:

1. Turn off Engine

2. Press Start/Stop Engine button (Ignition button) 3 times very quickly

3. On your dash, after 10 seconds or so, it will say you are in Diagnostic Mode

4. Hold trip reset button (The button on the side of turn signal lever) and wait 20 seconds or so until the oil reset option comes up

5. If you press the button without holding it, you will be able to cycle through all the options, like brake fluid reset and other resets. The first option is the oil change reset option. It will either say “Reset Possible” or “Reset Impossible”. When you cycle to this menu, hold trip reset button for 10 seconds or so and it will say “Reset?”, press and hold trip reset button again after seeing that it says “Reset?” to reset.

6. Switch off car by pressing Start/Stop Engine button to exit diagnostic mode.

7. Your oil change has been reset.

If you want to check whether you have reset it (Without relying on CEL disappearing from dash), just go back to diagnostic menu by following above instructions and once you reach the oil change reset menu, it should say “Reset Impossible”

Hope this helps!

5W40 is good or 0W20 according to owner's manual.

Is the engine running during this time since you said switch off engine to exit diagnostic mode, but pressing the start stop button three times quickly doesn't start the engine as you're not pressing the brake and this would turn on and off the engine then on again very quickly if you were. It might still be cranking on the second press and then started on the third so maybe you don't mean that.

No, do not switch on the ignition. Don’t step on the brakes, just simply click ignition button 3 times to enter diagnostic mode.

5W40 is good. But I'm pretty sure G generation needs 0W but only dealership has that. 5W40 is a viable replacement.
I know this is old but there's a sticker under the hood that states which oil to use, mine says 0w20, if yours says the same stick with same exact oil only put a different oil in an emergency until you can get to change the oil and put the correct oil

I wouldnt run a 0w20, its solely for fuel consumption. I would run a 0w30/5w30, if you live in a hot climate at least 5w30 but i would prefer a 5w40. LL04 if GPF.

Does anyone know how many quarts for G20 (330I)? The manual and online sites do not specify exactly.

Nice! That’s actually much better than writing it all out, can get confusing after so many steps :P

Sweet, that did the trick on my G20, thanks.
A brake fluid change just popped up due since 11/2001 (on a 3 month old car)
The only difference is that you have to hold the stalk button down when it asks you if you want to reset, not just tap once.

Also works for G29

Just wanted to let you know that your procedure for resetting your oil change indicator also worked for my 2019 Z4 (G29). Thanks for your help.

How do you reset the oil light if it says Impossible? I have only 600
Miles but it’s already been 12 months and the oil service light is on. I changed the oil myself but unable to reset the oil maintenance light at this time bc it says impossible.

I get the Diagnostic mode message to come up, but continuing to hold down the button doesn't get the oil change menu or any other menu up for that matter. Doors and windows are shut. Any ideas either what I could be doing wrong or what is preventing it to open the oil reset menu?

Thanks.
