Anyone with a RWD M340i regret not getting xDrive?

Does anyone with a rwd car regret not getting xDrive?

It feels to me that the 255 section rear tires struggle to handle the torque and as a result when I take off at anything more than 3/4 throttle I’m caught between spinning the rear wheels and the electronic nannies shutting things down. There is a back and forth that is quite disruptive until I’m well into second gear before I can just nail it.

Can anyone with a RWD car weigh in?

I really don’t want to have to do launch control at every stop light.

Even cornering is difficult in this regard. Exiting hairpin curves from 1000 rpm in second gear produces the the same fight between the the torque and electronics.

Otherwise the car is a blast to drive (love the B58 and this automatic transmission is the first auto that would make me second guess getting a manual) but this is starting to ruin it for me.

Do the 275 section width tires on the Z4 make that much difference?

I have RWD and the non staggered tires and yet you think 255 width isn't enough rubber in the rear lol. The 225 rears can be a handful on wet surfaces but on the bright side this will improve will control skills. Where I live in South Florida we don't need the Xi.

I wish my care had those 255 width rear tires but my car came from out of state and I had foolishly assumed I would get staggered setup. The biggest drawback for me is the mediocre stance of the non staggered tires in the rear.

Ps. I have no issues laying the hammer down when the need arises without issues provided surface is not wet.

It also has to do so much with the type of tires you have on in my opinion. I have the Goodyear run flats, and while they're pretty good even considering that it's been below freezing in our area, everybody swears by the michellins ps4s. But those are summer tires. I've had a 335i xdrive before, and I love the m340i in rwd so much more. Its just so much more fun. And if you are getting a problem with the electronics intervention, just hold down the traction button until everything is off 😁

I have xDrive and my car acts the same way.

Get bigger & wider wheels and that should help.

No regrets whatsoever. The RWD is a blast to drive. If you need launch control at every traffic light you might be driving a little too aggressively!

I have the Michelin tires.

I want grip not the ability to slip.

Agreed - I can plant my foot to the floor in pretty much any weather in my M340 xdrive and not lose traction.

RWD here. Tire/Brake/Oil package.

For Dallas driving, no regrets. The vehicle handles perfectly.

If I were up North, I might consider X. I had it on my old m550i and it made road trips feel a lot better when driving through shit conditions.

Traction from a dead stop?

Traction accelerating out of the apex of low speed turns?

In snow/ice-less roads? No spin. All grip.

Same with turns. I've had the vehicle for 3 months... Never one skid and that includes in rain.

Traction coming out of a corner has been an issue since e9x days. the car is undertired and can't put power down properly. just ask f8x guys. e46 had 255r and 225f.

Get the widest summer tire in the back like bstone re 71r 275 or 285 and 245 or 255 in front. It will be a different car.

I run 275r and 255f on my e90 and it is amazing what it does to handling but I have more camber in front also.

With better and wider tires you should feel significant improvement.

This is a lease and other than xDrive it's a loaded car. I'm not looking to put more money into it. Was originally intended to hold me over until the G80 M3 but I'm not happy with the kidneys turning into a big snout... I had an F80 with 19" Michelin PSS 255s up front and 275s rear. Even with much more torque I don't think I ever lost traction on a dry road without deliberately trying to break loose.

yeah I don't like new giant ugly kidneys also.

then the only optons are to still get better tires or get out of the lease and get something else. the car has close to stock f8x power.

You need to drive a RWD with staggered high-performance summer (or winter) tires. It will have plenty of traction. If you're driving on all-season tires that is a big cause of your problems.

One thing to note is that if you have the square setup you almost certainly are on the "cruiser" all seasons... least sporty rubber offered, the same tires as a 330i non sport, so real performance rubber will significantly improve the vehicle experience

One way to justify getting new wider wheels and or even just performance tires on a lease is that you will have the original tires in good standing for lease turn in. Unlikely the stock all seasons will last 30k, def not 36k. So at some point you are going to have to pay for new tires anyway why not make the money you are going to spend on new tires be worth it to enjoy the vehicle. rather than throwing good money at crap tires just to avoid the lease turn in penalty. (Bmw charges you ~300 per tire for the all seasons)

In your shoes I would do 1 of 2 things:
1. try to find a take off set (used) of the matching oem wider rears from the staggered setup and order performance rubber for all 4 corners. End of lease put the skinny rears and all seasons back on
2. Order aftermarket staggered wheels with performance rubber (tire rack or similar can guide you), end of lease put all 4 original wheel/tires back on

It feels to me that the 255 section rear tires struggle to handle the torque and as a result when I take off at anything more than 3/4 throttle I'm caught between spinning the rear wheels and the electronic nannies shutting things down. There is a back and forth that is quite disruptive until I'm well into second gear before I can just nail it.

Can anyone with a RWD car weigh in?

I really don't want to have to do launch control at every stop light.

End of lease put the skinny rears and all seasons back on
2. Order aftermarket staggered wheels with performance rubber (tire rack or similar can guide you), end of lease put all 4 original wheel/tires back on
I have the staggered setup. (ZTK pkg - 19" Michelin PS4S 225 up front 255 in back).
Ahh totally misread.....
