Emergency Stop
Hi all.
I was driving through our estate on Friday, without any driver assistance options that I am aware of, and the car appeared to perform an emergency stop all by itself - there was no risk of collision that I could see. A large red car symbol appeared on the dashboard whilst this occurred, but then vanisned once the car came to a halt. I'll book it in with the dealer for a once over as I'd hate for this to happen on a motorway, but was wondering if this had happened to others here? Scary stuff. |

I had a similar issue a few days back. The red car symbol popped up on a road that had nothing nearby or around it. It was an empty road with no traffic or people or anything. Luckily, the car didn't stop. It beeped loudly and scared me but didn't do anything else. It then went away by itself in a few seconds and everything was back to normal. It was a foggy day though and I attributed it to that causing the cameras to be confused.
Let us know what the dealer says

Mine does it quite regularly at lowish speeds when there is a lot of parked cars and I have to cross the white lines to go around them, I just accelerate a little bit and it goes away?

I’ve had quite a few messages during heavy rain to inform me that the early warning systems are temporarily disabled but ok to drive with caution.
Odd as the windscreen sensor appears to be within the sweep of the windscreen wipers. |

This has happened to me, on BMWs, Audis, Mercs. The technology is not perfect. It's the same for speed limit info. I'd say 5-10% of the time the speed limit being displayed in the instrument cluster is wrong. This is why when automonous driving is being pushed it fills me with horror. It will not work properly all of the time!

Definitely agree with the speed limit issue in the U.K. seen loads of instances where it shows wrong. The worst is around schools where we have 20mph at certain times during the day during school term. However it shows 20 all the time and if you had it set for automatically adjusting.....

Thanks everyone!
I called the dealer who referred me to BMW Emergency Services, after a brief call with them they've decided to send an engineer round to the house today to diagnose. Great service from them so far, colour me impressed. I'll keep you all updated. |

The engineer has just left and there were no faults present, he did find something that indicated that the collision sensor was triggered which was why the braking occurred.
He was aware of three other similar incidents and in each case the sensitivity of the sensor was reduced, he did that here and asked me to monitor. Hopefully that's that then. |
