The F30 is a great car. My wife and I love it as a daily driver.

Maybe I'm being nostalgic but is it better the E30 325i, E36 328i m-sport, E46 M3 and E90 M3 that I, to this day, truly love and remember, all for different reasons? To me, it isn't - it's a yawn - forgettable. I also put my money where my mouth is and continue to keep my 7 year old "ancient" E90 after test driving the latest M3 with MT.

But that's a story for another time...

Anyway - I'm sure I've bored the lot of you so I'll keep quiet from now.
No please don't keep quiet, it's great hearing everyone's opinions on the bimmers they've owned. The build quality of my e90 & e92 was bulletproof and they were great drivers too... sadly I've not owned any older BMWs so I can't comment! The quality definitely took a drop on the F30, though they did pull that back to a degree with the LCI... I'm hoping the new car will improve this area still further, together with the drive (obviously)

However, the E90 was the heaviest 3 series ever and it will stay that way for a while. The F30 was lighter and the G20 is even lighter still. The last 5 series that was even close to the G20 in size was the American E28 from 81-88. All subsequent ones were longer than the F30. I'm not saying I don't like small cars, but cars are so much safer these days. For my daily driver, I want something safe and fun.

Also, you feel weight, not size. Having an extra inch or two in the back of your car CAN'T be felt if the car weighs the same or less. Having a bumper that sticks out an extra inch in the front can't be felt. If you like your E90 so much, there's no reason you couldn't have as much fun in a car slightly larger yet much lighter. Of course, the F30 had terrible suspension tuning and steering compared to the E90, but that's another conversation.
Yes weight is more important, as long as the G20 doesn't grow more than an inch in length. And it actually shouldn't, as the G30 only grew an inch (26mm) over the old 5er... so things do look promising! And yes the last 5er to be as small as a (current) 3 series was indeed the e28 of 30+ years ago so we are going back to when ALL cars were much much smaller!

Talking about the 'no manual' issue, I think they're just paving the way for the fully automatic EVs of the future and trying to bring us round gently to the fact that manual cars will very soon be a thing of the past!

I'm really looking forward to the G20... I was interested in the X4 before we actually saw it (and the pricing) but I'll get an awful lot more for my money in a G20, as well as a lower slung, sportier stance and feel...

All major cars are tested like this. Especially cars made to run well in many different environments.
I was being sarcastic since they still have issues.

It is sad that the MT is disappearing in the famed 3-series. This is the car that essentially invented the RWD, 50/50 wt distribution, straight 6 engine sport saloon. Manual transmission is inherent in the character of the car!

Anyhow, my E90 is an Auto and is plenty fun to drive so it doesn't bother me as much as you guys who have lived with the MT.

I was carving some corners in the mountains near Seattle today (until a stupid a$$ Prius spoiled the fun) and boy the F30 cannot replicate the feeling of this car. I hope the G20 brings back the same joy to the 3-series name.

Yeah that's the 1st day of the Paris Autoshow. But we'll probably get the full leaked images on the 3rd or 2nd.

I’d hope we see it even before October! Most ‘official’ unveilings are preceded by online pics a week or so beforehand

We could see it next week....

Yes. On the larger engines. And not just in the US.

The official unveil is scheduled for October 2nd.

The actual Paris Motor Show opens its doors to the public on October 4th, but normally for auto shows, days before the doors to the public are open, there are industry-related, B2B, and press events, so the G20 3-Series will officially be unveiled on Tuesday.

There will even be a livestream online.
Press release and link to livestream broadcast below:
