I won’t believe it until I see it in the flesh at my local dealer, but I’m starting to think that this car is actually real? They’re legitimately going to produce these things en masse and offer them for sale?

Ok. Fair enough comparison but you're not telling the whole story and therefore not providing full context. Take another look at those older BMWs...

Look at their shapes, lines, height, width, etc. now look at the grilles. BMW got the grilles right on those prior models because they complement the car due to their proportion relative to the car. Now look at the new 4-er. It just doesn't jive. They brought back the shark nose somewhat but that's about it. The grilles are too angular and large. Also, no Hofmeister kink...

Had a Q60 coupe as a rental for 3 days

It's perfect for sporty look luxury ride.

It seems to be as high off the ground as the sedan it's just that it has two doors I see the appeal.

The recording is strange

It's only a few seconds and has two many cuts

The driver seems to appear on both sides of the car.
At different cuts in the video

Look at the hump in the dash for the steering wheel
Seems to switch sides

This looks so plain and boring. Hopefully it looks better in person but I'm not counting on it. Had high hopes for this car but I only see a disaster

More thoughts on the styling:

On a forum like this, with BMW enthusiasts, many of whom long for the days of the E3, the E9, and that first M5, are going to react differently than non-enthusiasts, at least to some degree. Hardcore fans have a special appreciation for all of the styling successes of past models and, when comparing the G22 to those (or even when not making any comparisons) can see why its styling is, well, offensive to the senses. That said, there are two audiences by whom the success of the G22's styling will be determined: (1) non-enthusiast car shoppers and (2) future enthusiasts.

Buying a luxury/sport coupe takes a special kind of shopper, and, contrary to popular opinion on most forums, many are not what you might consider "automotive enthusiasts." Those shoppers also don't have many choices in this segment. None of us know how they'll react to the G22's styling, nor do we know to what extent the exterior styling will influence their purchasing decisions. The execs at BMW have, presumably, evaluated those issues. We'll see what the sales numbers are like but, remember, non-SUV vehicles, and coupes in particular, have had declining sales for years. The relatively small piece of the market that a coupe represents may have been one of the factors prompting BMW to take a risk on the G22's styling. It does not represent a high volume model for the company -- certainly not as much as the G20 or the vast majority of the SUV models.

And future enthusiasts? Those are the folks who will see the G22 in museums and at vintage racing events. They'll look back through old YouTube videos from 2020 and show their grandchildren what this car was like. Will they remember it fondly, as a bold attempt to display a daring and trend-setting style, or will they share the popular view expressed in this thread? I have no idea. I kind of doubt that history will look favorably at this design, but I'm not Nostradamus. We'll see what the G22's legacy is in 10, 20, 30 years. Will be interesting.

There is a teaser pic on BMW Canada instagram. Grill looks better with a license plate across it. 😂

Edit: Which is growing on me as it breaks it up visually.

This thing is just as bad as the spy photos. Consequently, I am still shopping for my next ride at dealers other than BMW.....

The BMW Garmisch was originally shown at at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, but the car itself basically vanished after its debut.

That car remained forgotten about until Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design, uncovered a photograph of the lost concept car. This triggered his determination to find out more, ultimately leading to the mission to recreate the distinctive Garmisch again.

For van Hooydonk, building a new version gave BMW the chance to "pay tribute to Mr. Gandini" and also be able to "highlight Bertone's stylistic influence on the evolution of BMW design. For me, that alone was reason enough to do this project – filling in the gaps and completing BMW's history."

And part of that original design as well the Garmisch Concept made it to the Concept 4 Series and now to the production car, the grille. The iconic BMW grille has long been open to interpretation by its corporate designers.
You’re right, we forgot about this piece of trash so why are you reminding us??
You are correct,it was quite unattractive. I am being nice, that thing was ugly.

Only sales statistics will vindicate the design team of the new 4 series.

Part of me has inevitably accepted the new design but wishes for a an option to holographically project the front US license plate - only when necessary.
