Did you ever get the Flexible Charger mounted? I have an issue with the NEMA 14-50 cable being assembled 180 off. When connected, it makes the front of the charger with the LED face the wall and the mounting screws outward! Maybe the charger or cable was made on a Friday?

I didn't get mine but I won't be happy if I see the same thing . I'm assuming there's no way of twisting either the part going in the unit or the plug.

If that's the case someone designed that cable on a Friday like you said. I would probably cut the plug and put a new NEMA 14-50P plug if everything else fails.

Something like this:
- Miady NEMA 14-50P Power Plug, 50-Amp 4-Prong 125/250V Straight Blade Angles Dryer Replacement Male Plug https://a.co/d/eeCesAV

Or you can call BMW genius or the dealer and show them this impressive piece of engineering.

LOL… One too many Weißbiers on a Friday PM.

Same on my charger, too. I hazard a guess it was done that way so the orientation is correct when you use the charger mount bracket. You’ll rotate/bend charger whip upwards…then boom, it’s correct. That may or may not be the actual reason… but that’s what I’m going with

Lol, no, they messed up, that cable will not twist easily adding unwanted stress to the socket making it more difficult to remove than it needs to be.

Im looking at some pics and vids online, it looks like that's how they designed it... there has to be a reason, the germans don't usually leave anything to chance...

fortunately my 14-50 is installed at a 90 so shouldn't be an issue.

I did, but it's available on shopbmwusa.com or cheaper at other retailers like getbmwparts.

before writing off a permanent wall mount charger, check your state to see if there is an incentive for chargers. Here is Massachusetts there is a sizeable rebate for WIFI home chargers...this gives the utility the ability to throttle your charger...but some states have straight up rebates, the same as an EV purchase.

O...one more thing, if you are utilizing a plug in charger please check the socket regularly, and consider a smoke detector.

Agreed. I got $500 off from my electric company so it only cost me about $225.

In Virginia I got $120 rebate for a charger install. Plus I will get $40 per year if I agree to let them throttle me during times of high demand. It would take a long time to cover the full cost of the install (like 27 years). I think MA give you a better deal. I should have done the install last year when the federal government was giving $1200 for ev charger installs.

Mind elaborating on the smoke detector suggestion? What does the smoke detector have to do with the type of charger used?

The outlet has the potential to be a high-resistance point in the flow of power, generating a lot of heat or sparks - especially if the contacts get loose. A properly hardwired connection is much less likely to start a fire.

There are features of a NEMA 14 socket designed to mitigate those risks compared to a normal NEMA 15 (regular 15 or 20 Amp household recepticals), but stuff happens.

only if the outlet isn't installed correctly. Always a good idea to use a licensed electrician. Using undersized wiring/sub standard hardware is asking to have your house catch fire... install to code and you'll be fine.

Those NEMA outlets are intended for something being plugged in and staying plugged in...and the high draw from a charger at 48 amps makes a lot of heat, for a lot longer than a Dryer or oven...these plug in chargers have more failure points then normal...do a quick youtube search on EV charger fire or failure...I come from an industry where all you do is mitigate ways that something will kill you, so I tend to be slightly over cautious.

I agree.
As an engineer part of my job is risk mitigation.
Hardwired is always preferred.

Ideally I would have some type of setup that turns off the sub-panel in my garage when the smoke detector goes off...I am pretty sure the technology is out there with smart devices, and relays and such...I would then need too get a battery back-up for the garage door opener so I could get to the fire...see over cautious.
