If that's the case someone designed that cable on a Friday like you said. I would probably cut the plug and put a new NEMA 14-50P plug if everything else fails. Something like this: - Miady NEMA 14-50P Power Plug, 50-Amp 4-Prong 125/250V Straight Blade Angles Dryer Replacement Male Plug https://a.co/d/eeCesAV Or you can call BMW genius or the dealer and show them this impressive piece of engineering. |

Same on my charger, too. I hazard a guess it was done that way so the orientation is correct when you use the charger mount bracket. You’ll rotate/bend charger whip upwards…then boom, it’s correct. That may or may not be the actual reason… but that’s what I’m going with

Im looking at some pics and vids online, it looks like that's how they designed it... there has to be a reason, the germans don't usually leave anything to chance...
fortunately my 14-50 is installed at a 90 so shouldn't be an issue. Last edited by mlanes01; 07-20-2022 at 01:24 PM.. |

before writing off a permanent wall mount charger, check your state to see if there is an incentive for chargers. Here is Massachusetts there is a sizeable rebate for WIFI home chargers...this gives the utility the ability to throttle your charger...but some states have straight up rebates, the same as an EV purchase.

The outlet has the potential to be a high-resistance point in the flow of power, generating a lot of heat or sparks - especially if the contacts get loose. A properly hardwired connection is much less likely to start a fire.
There are features of a NEMA 14 socket designed to mitigate those risks compared to a normal NEMA 15 (regular 15 or 20 Amp household recepticals), but stuff happens. |

Those NEMA outlets are intended for something being plugged in and staying plugged in...and the high draw from a charger at 48 amps makes a lot of heat, for a lot longer than a Dryer or oven...these plug in chargers have more failure points then normal...do a quick youtube search on EV charger fire or failure...I come from an industry where all you do is mitigate ways that something will kill you, so I tend to be slightly over cautious.

As an engineer part of my job is risk mitigation. Hardwired is always preferred.

Ideally I would have some type of setup that turns off the sub-panel in my garage when the smoke detector goes off...I am pretty sure the technology is out there with smart devices, and relays and such...I would then need too get a battery back-up for the garage door opener so I could get to the fire...see over cautious.
