And how on earth do you expect intake noise when the mic is at the rear of the car.

My B58 (downpipe, Muffler delete) sounds pretty damn sexy to me. I love a V8 (especially the e9x) but the sound of my modded B58 is just way too unique. I get compliments all the time.
As for the best, S85 is definitely up there..but have you heard a supercharged one? There's no competition at that point, that exhaust is literally the antichrist. For example:

I owned a Z4M with the S54 and it sounded fantastic - much better than the E46 M3 (I had the Stromung mufflers). I tried unresonated midpipes and it sounded horrible. lol Had to change back to stock midpipes immediately. Definitely easy to make the S54 sound horrible.

Full disclosure - I own a Z4M coupe (S54) and E39 M5 (S62).
From a BMW standpoint, the S54 and S85 sound the best at their lofty redlines. They both sound great to me; since I can hear the S54 at redline without risking a major ticket (unlike the S85, from experience) that is my favorite.

Totally agree. I had an E46 M3 and a Z4MC and, at least from the inside, the Z4MC sounded waaaay better. This might be wrong, but I felt like it sounded better mostly because of the acoustics/shape of the car and because you were essentially sitting on top of the exhaust lol.

The induction sound from the S85. That is probably one of the best noises to have come out of any car.

Sad reality that they offer none of these nowadays.

But even when you're idling or revving and listening from the outside, the Z4M is much throatier and doesn't have that hollow/tin can sound the E46 has.
