Does anyone know why certain options aren't available in the US? These Galvanic controls... Merino leather... etc. Does BMW think US buyers wouldn't be interested in such options?

You can get all sorts of “Embelishments” from Ali Express.
I bought a brushed Stainless Steel surround to fit around the light switch cluster for around £6. Actually looks bloody good.
You can get all sorts of things for the G20 already. I was a bit sceptical but the fit and finish is spot on.

Look what I found on AliExpress

Just seems really unfair for you guys. Your market is so large that it could easily accommodate the variety of options on offer elsewhere.

It almost seems like BMW USA is just lazy and wants to keep their lineup simple. No waiting lists, fewer permutations, keep costs down etc?

No worries. Understand. For me brushed stainless steel is brushed stainless steel as long as it matches and fits.

If it's available in Canada, it should be easy to source to the US.

You just have to be willing to pay up and do some leg work.

Start with online merchants that's stationed in Canada.

It's not a dealer installed part though. The dealerships up here may be able to find the part number, but you usually have to use a valid VIN to order it.

I doubt it's "vin-locked," not even the GTS & CS OEM parts are, more like it's too new to source or on a scarce backorder.

In my experience, as long as you're willing to pay, someone is willing get it for you.

I've bought Canada-exclusive stuff before but it took a few months

It's going to take a while. Even people here are waiting to get theirs (that should have come with them but were left out).

The crystal pieces for the G20 are aftermarket Chinese stuff (not saying they are bad, but not OEM). I'm sure you could buy OEM X5 or X7 shifter and start button but they'll cost a pretty penny.

I optioned my X5 with crystal controls because BMW offered it as an option. Not sure I'd option a 3 series with crystal controls as that would look out of place imo, but galvanic controls for sure had BMW offered it as an option to US buyers. Same goes for Merino leather - optioned my X5 with it but just didn't have that option on the 3 series without spending $5k.
