Waze HUD inconsistency in iDrive 8

Is anyone with an iDrive 8 system using Waze for navigation? I'm using it specifically with Android Auto and I noticed something very strange.

Google Maps navigation would come up both as a full-fledged map on the virtual cockpit, as well as arrow-based directions on the HUD. However, usually Waze only comes up as arrows on the virtual cockpit and doesn't come up on the HUD at all. That is unless you start the navigation prior to entering the vehicle and the car starts up and connects to the phone with the navigation route already engaged - then Waze appears on the HUD.

This feels like a bug, to be honest. Is this happening for anyone else and is it a recent occurrence or has always been like that? Maybe a bug report should be filed to Waze, Android Studio or BMW? Or is there something I'm missing and there's a way to have Waze on the HUD at all times, instead of always trying to hack it by having my navigation up and running before entering the car?
