Photoshop

What editing software do all of you guys use? I want the versatility and features of Photoshop, but I don't want to pay $700 for CS4...

Suggestions?

Already bought it.

I use a combination of Photoshop/Fireworks/Adobe Bridge for most of my editing. If you are just looking to improve or enhance photos, you can look into Aperture for Macs. I have a trial version now and it seems decent. However, it does not have the "chopping" tools like photoshop. So if you want to insert a hot girl next to your car, you might want to spring for photoshop.

I have Aperture and it's essentially useless for anything except organization.

You should learn how to use it. Its hardly useless.

I use aperture for photo management/organization as well as for overall raw adjustments. When I need more control on the pixel level, I just open the file up in Photoshop. Aperture manages the original file and the layered PSD if you want. Both apps go hand in hand. You could easily swap aperture for lightroom as well. They both pretty much do the same thing.

It's might be hard to justify spending $700 on photoshop, but think of it this way. Photoshop has been through more than 10 years of R&D by hundreds of developers. Your exhaust probably cost the same amount and went through less than a year of R&D with only 2-3 people. Photoshop is an investment, car mods generally aren't.

I think a lot of people have a hard time paying $700 for software, no matter what it is. I agree Photoshop very good, it's probably one of the few pieces of software out there I would shell out that kind of cash to own. However, I do minimal post processing, and find CaptureNX can do everything I need.

Unless you make money from your photography (I've almost broken even, hardly a money maker), most people would rather spend $$$ on their car than software.

See, but the new iPhoto does relatively well at basic RAW adjustment. I completely understand your logic on photoshop, it's just hard to put down that money. I ended up doing it, though.

I've got CS4, but do 99% of processing in DxO's Optics Pro which does RAW conversion, lens and camera-specific geometric and error corrections automatically, along lighting adjustments, all in batch processing. I also routinely adjust horizons and correct for perspective errors and crop and further adjust for light, color temperature, contrast and saturation.

It's much easier and quicker to use than PS CS4 and replaces all the functions of Lightroom and Bridge. I still use PS for heavier corrections and more experimental stuff. If I could have only one software it'd be DxO's Optics Pro. It's a bargain also, at under $200. Take a free trial.

I'm in college and I pay for everything. Music, software, movies...

Think of it this way. Say you go out and write a software program, take a sweet picture, write a great song...You don't want people just passing it around when you're trying to make money off of it.

I can't, in good conscience, ignore that.

im in college, too and i definitely dont have hundreds of dollars to spend on photoshop. i dont use the program enough to justify spending on it. im sure if i were a graphic designer or something which heavily relied on such software, id invest in a retail copy. i do buy a decent majority of my music, though.

Hopefully you pay only Student prices. For PS Extended (or whatever the call the top version) the student discount is around $700.

Yea I'm not saying it's okay for college students to steal software. I was just being honest about not paying for much software (or music for that matter) while I was in college.
