E46 M3? am I nuts?!

Am I absolutely batsh!t crazy to even be considering this? background info...

I had a 2001 M3 since new and loved it, sold it 4 years later with 120k miles and still running strong. Then I had an E39 M5 and had it for 7 years and though I liked it, I kept trying to make it behave like the M3....

The E92 I never connected with, it felt like a more modern version of my e39. Im kinda in between cars at the moment, my wife has a 2013 GS 350 which is a great comfy daily. We work at the same place so I really dont NEED a second car but obviously I want one. I also want to do a few track days a year.

So....the considered thing. Its a 2005 E46 Dinan S2 M3. Besides the S2 stuff it has euro CSL headers, full supersprint exhaust, 3.91 diff, full suspension, wheels, etc.... Its basically what I fantasized about when I had my M3. But whats holding me back, and making me think Im crazy to even consider it is it has 61k miles, and they want 35k for it. I mean its almost 10 years old.... cars have come so far since then. Im not worried about mechanical issues as I trust the source but.... What will this thing be worth 2-3 years from now assuming I keep it in the same excellent condition? Would I be better off with an M235 and just throw some coils on it along with an LSD? Anyway, curious what you guys think...

Its from EAG, which I've heard and seen they are indeed quite overpriced, but I've also read tons and tons of reviews from people who are super happy with their purchase. Saying it was worth the extra to have all the maintenence bits and bobs which add up to a lot already done and accounted for. I had a friend buy an E46 a few years ago for about 24k and what a junker that was. It looked decent but needed bushings, suspension and a ton of other stuff.

But still...Im tending to agree 35k is a TON. It does have maybe 20k worth on it, but the damn thing was what, 54k new?

Just get a slightly used M235i in a few months for slightly more than that 10 y/o M3.

35K for an E46 M3 is batshit nuts. Having said that, in my opinion the E46 M3 is second only to the E30 in terms of being the best M3 to have. It's useably brutal, just how an M3 should be. The 235i is nice, but an M car it is not, nor will it ever be. Plus the E46 is naturally aspirated, just how a proper M car should be. I'll take mine in Leguna Seca blue with the SMG please.

Don't start trying to rationalize 35k for an E46. It could be an awesome car, but you'd end up regretting spending that kind of money on it.

M235i with coils and LSD? That would be near $50k. I say splurge on a base F80 M3. It's about the same weight (maybe lighter), more power, I-6, 6 speed manual.

1. As others have stated, way overpriced for such high mileage.

2. with all those mods, the previous owner probably ran his e46 really hard. Be prepared to dump money into it for repairs/maint.

EAG puts a lot of time and effort into finding their cars and they also ensure that they are in tip top shape before offering them for sale. That being said, I would think long and hard before spending 75% of the original MSRP for a car that is 10 years old and has 61k on the clock.

screw EAG, that is far far overpriced.

the e46 m3 is a great car, but it is very old now and mine was riddled with rattles, noises, little issues and constant suspension bushing issues.

Loved it, but it was a hassle honestly.

I figured it was EAG as soon as he said the price tag. I saw a $20k E36 M3 a couple of weeks ago

IMHO, yes maybe they spend time to fix up their cars, but you can tell me it costs $36k. That's bananas. You could easily find a very nice E46 in the low 20s, maybe mid 20s and still have $10k to fix and mod it!

That is bat shit insane over priced and just for reference this car is MUCH nicer and still way overpriced IMO. That car is also due for Inspection II if not already completed and that can close in on $2K depending on what is needed.

That's the asking price of the car. They would be stupid to ask for exactly what it cost them to purchase the car and fix it. This is a business, after all, and I think the business is a good one. If you want a car that has been vetted and completely sorted, these are your guys. Some people don't want to buy a car then have to deal with the hassle of paying someone to then sort it.

Yeah I agree with the majority of the answers, its a crazy price for a 61k mile 2005 car.

Yes the mods are a ton, but still... What will this thing be worth 2-3 years from now? MAYBE 20? probably not. I have a friend going to check it out today, just for giggles.

And I did see that one from daytona but wrote it off right away for the SMG. I found another super nice car, it was a 2005 as well, but with 44k miles and it was a certified dinan S3 supercharged with 460@ the wheels. It was only 33k for that one. BUT...also SMG and I just dont want that.

We'll see... I like hearing different opinions and ways of thinking. Thats what makes these forums fun. I do also have another nuts idea but its a far more practical one. There is a 2012 Cayman R with 12k miles, loaded, and they are asking 59k for it. Yes its a lot more...but its so much more car. Why does the world have to work on money?! It would be so much easier to just get what you want. Oh well...

How are you debating an e46 m3 but your alternative is getting an m235i AND adding coilovers/LSD? Also a $59k Porsche? Your numbers don't make sense but with what you are saying just get a new m3/m4

Because I'm all over the place I know... I could get the new M3, and I'm sure it will be an amazing car. But it's just so damn much. 75k and I don't want 1st model year. I'm also inpatient. Crazy I know...

Why cant you take the e39 to the track? My cousin does that and keeps up quite well lol.

If you really want an e46 get a different one and use additional money to get it track prepped!

If I were you in your position (yes your numbers indeed do not make sense haha) I would most likely go for an f10 m5 (or an e60 m5 if f10 is out of budget, I've seen super nice e60s with 20k miles right under 50k). At 60k, if you go little higher you may just be able to get a gtr. In my point of view, I'd like trying new things. If I already had an m3, I'll try something else out. I'm on my second e90 328i, slightly regret not going to 335 at least lol, but still love it. So imo, I'd look at either gtr, that Cayman R which is a nice car, or an f10 m5. Of those I like having practical things so m5 would win
